The Benfica v Barca game was even more bonkers than the City game - 4-5 with an interesting first goal for Rapinha - I know I’m a day behind you all but I’ve been battening down my hatches - Ireland has basically closed!

Like all years will show interest at knock out stage. Even more so this year when this new system just in to make more money. Oh for the days when just best sides in Europe competed. If one studied who is now playing sure would find several that are barely our Div 1/2 standard

I'm certainly more interested in tonight's fixtures than I would be for the usual sequence of largely dead rubbers at the group stage.

Is there much difference though? 18 games tonight, how many are critical? The old format a handfull of games would still have been critical in the last round.

Man city could still have had a must win game.

Liverpool are resting the whole 1st team tonight I think as it's not that important where they finish.

The fundamental issue isn't the format it's that roughly 25% of the teams are nowhere near the right level of quality.

It's the qualification process that needs changing but that means to make the group stage exciting more teams from the main countrys need to be involved.

Arsenal and Liverpool making 7 and 9 changes sums up this format that once once the home of elite clubs
Not imo. I was hugely skeptical before the league started but there have been some great games and there are so many permutations still possible from tonight‘s programme. The fact Liverpool and Arsenal have already qualified and can rest players and that their games won’t be the ones to watch doesn’t detract from that for me. Can’t wait to see it unfold.

Watching the Goals Show on TNT. It's bewildering.

Shame the programme got rid of the crew from previous seasons . Intelligent, hipster self reverential fun replaced by Ali McCoist sheesh.

This. It's a miles better format, plus the fact that losing teams don't get to make a mockery of the Europa league by joining that competition.
