There is a good few feet gap between the Welcome to signs for Brighton & Hove/East Sussex on the A259. Is that some kind of self governing enclave ?

Ye Gods! Having managed to hive Croydon off into Greater London we don't want Crawley as a replacement!
The massive unitary authorities, with their elected mayors, looks like a good way to an elected second chamber (Senate).
