The league table doesn’t lie, where we are is where we should be.
I think the point is with a different (better) manager would we be higher and by how much?

Hurzeler is coming in for a lot of criticism on NSC, the implication being that with the set of players at his disposal we should be doing better.

My view is probably the same as you actually. We have a very young squad and therefore the inconsistency we’re seeing makes sense. If we can keep the bulk of the squad together for two or three years we could start doing very well.

7-11. would have been my answer but it wasn't an option so i went with 9- 13th.

What we have is potiental. As we are now though, i think we are about where we should be (this seemed to also be the consenus at the beginning of the season.

I think what is often ignored is that our current crop of players is very unbalanced. We are lacking like for like replacements in defence.

For example, our left wingback position is an really important part of our attack. Yet our other attacking left footed full back is conspicuously absent.

I’ve noticed that Hürzeler seems pretty unloved on here, which is a shame, as for me it marks our transformation from patient solid fan base into whining entitled fan base. There’s a significant number on here who seem to pine for the charismatic bellendery of RDZ, who I wasn’t massively sorry to see the back of.

I accepted with Hürzeler’s appointment (young coach, no PL experience) that we were back to a “slow burn” approach, looking to rebuild over multiple seasons, but there doesn’t seem to have been a wide acceptance of that from lots of our fans.

I look at the teams above us in the table and I see good squads with good managers. To be near them in our first season with Hürzeler strikes me as doing better than I expected. None of the players we brought in were PL established, which means that coach and players are learning on the job. If we stop giving our coaches and players time to adapt and improve, our whole model collapses. We buy on potential, not current ability, and try to find the coaches who can help our squad fulfill their potential. I thought that was widely understood.

I’d say that most of the criticism that Hürzeler gets on here is unwarranted. Nobody likes us losing, but we haven’t bought proven Champions League players, we’ve bought players who can develop into that if they fulfill their potential. We should not be acting like European football is (or should be) a given. This league doesn’t stand still, everyone else is improving too, and often on a larger budget. Other clubs won’t have ignored the fact that Brighton have done well recently, they’ll be catching up on the data side. We have no advantage that can’t be learnt and exploited by any other club in this league. Our coach was selected as the right fit by the club and IMO should be given the time and support to develop, just like our players.

The players just don't have the mentality to beat lower teams. Most opponents have now adopted the low block because they know we will huff and puff and get frigging nowhere whilst achieving 70% possession.

We have around the 15th largest budget and people think we should be finishing 5th? Christ alive.

Until we invest in wages at the level that Villa, Newcastle, Spurs, United, et al. do then anything above 15th is a success.
Yep. We spend money but that’s only because we also sell a lot of players. It’s all about wages ultimately. Until we have a top half budget we are punching above our weight.

We have a great squad, but it's too early in the lifecycle of the manager and squad to have any expectations at all.

Some great results, some poor results, but as yet, I'm not seeing a cohesive style.
Frustrating, but kind of understandable.
Very much like Potter's first season, but with a better squad.

I think it’s where we lose points that’s causing people to get frustrated. The homes games against Palace, Ipswich, Southampton, Wolves and Everton spring to mind. If we’d won those games but lost to Arsenal, Newcastle, Man City etc we’d probably have a happier fan base in here.
