All of my frIends in the US have already been whipped up into an extreme state of fear and loathing of 47 and his brutal regressive policies. And that's in less than a week. The rest of the world has to decide whether they appease this unstable thug for the next four years for purely economic reasons. Sadly I suspect they'll do exactly that :down:

I fear he is locked into this role for life, he is not going to risk another election. Or if he does the outcome will be pre-determined via his media mogel puppets. Will he now start setting up family members to succeed?

Sadly he has now empowered his followers to go after opponents with lethal force, without fear of consequence.

Oh come on. This is very dramatic.

He can’t have another election due to the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution. So you’re right there, he won’t be running again for President in the ballot boxes.

The guy is a scumbag, sure, and he’s a nutter to boot with a cult of personality built around him. But there’s absolutely no way he’ll be able to change the Constitution to have a third term.

My main coping strategy is that his pro-business-but-f***-everything-else philosophy has already been very good for my pension and share portfolio, which is very heavy on US tech stock. It's very kind of all the rednecks in Hicksville to have considered people like me when casting their votes, coz I can't imagine Trump gives a shiney shit about them.

Other coping strategies are the comfort that it's only 4 more years, at the most, and let's face it, he's not the healthiest, is he?

The ridiculous pre-emptive pardons Biden felt he had to issue followed by the pardoning by a felon of multiple felons says it all about where the US is now. It was a doubling down on the stolen election myth of 2020

Their constitution just isn't robust enough to suffer such a dishonest actors. Democracy is fragile and relies on people with basic morality to uphold it.

Last time round and during covid I liked watching clips on youtube of, usually, the opening monlogues of John Stewart on The Daily Show, Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers. Gallows humour. Although thinking back, watching US political satire was probably more of a way to avoid/cope with our own sh*tshow.

Im the same as the OP. I cant see or hear the man without my blood pressure rising. I therefore avoided the major news channels all day on Monday, and will do for some days. I leave the room when he is on the telly.
Unfortunately my wife likes to "know what's going on" so watches rolling news some days, so I have to find places to go, things to do. This will have to happen for at least 4 years now.

To cope with Trump, between 2016 and 2020 I decided to buy and read all 99 hardback volumes of the Everyman series of PG Wodehouse. It meant I spent 4 glorious years variously at Blandings Castle, the Drones Club, the Anglers Rest, and many other memorable locations. Much better than Trump World.

Confession. Although the plan was to get and read the whole series, I only managed 60. So now I have the ideal opportunity to fill in the gaps and finish the project.

To be serious, try to remember that chaos like this always feels 10x more worrying in the first few weeks or so. Pandemic, Russia war, financial crash 2007-08... it always feels worst in the beginning. Eventually you get desensitized and it blends in with the daily mix of starving children, nuke threats and PL results; usually not pleasant, but no longer something that occupies the front of your mind.

My tried n trusted limit ….. heavily limit exposure to the news. Imho I know the same information as someone like my Dad who watches the BBC news’s on repeat. For me this would include ignoring gloomy threads on nsc.

Then, carry on doing virtuous stuff like litter clearing, attempting to make those around me happier.

The overall message on better mental health, I learnt this 35 years ago, is you can’t give unless you’re in a good place yourself. So concentrate first on that.

We can’t control most externals, you only damage your mental and possibly physical health by immersing yourself in this sh1t. So don’t do it. This doesn’t mean you don’t care.
