My Year 7 son has been asked to think about his GCSE options.

The choice is so good at his (London) school, I want to go back!

Just for fun (no, really).... knowing what you know now, and with an eye on the future, which FIVE options would YOU choose?

I've excluded English, Mathematics and Science.

EDIT:

It messes up the poll but, for the record, students have to do:

Maths
English
A language (French, German, Latin or Spanish)
Science
History or Geography
And TWO from the list…

So if you picked Latin or Modern Language here, that would be your second/extra language choice.

And History/Geography would be in addition to Geography/History.

Surprised to see latin on there

I'd personally choose Geography, languages, history, business and sociology

Imagine creative media production is popular and probably has the most direct pathway to make money

I have marked what I would do, but given your sensible exclusions, I would encourage him to follow aptitude and interest for the rest. Skills and relationship with likely teachers might also come into it! :)

History, economics, psychology, business and creative media.

I think some of the best people I've recruited have the ability to understand people, can argue based on facts and evidence, understand commerciality and how the world works and can tell the story in an engaging way

Hence the choices above

Hard to pick just 5. Languages would depend what was taught...but definitely computer science, psychology, history and then probably, knowing what I know now, food nutrition and preparation for a life-skill.

Fantastic new subjects available now, choice made more difficult by my late interest in “boring“ old subjects like history and geography!

Could have picked at least 10.

My youngest is lucky enough to be doing geology for GCSE as he loves rocks, fossils and stuff like that, and really wants to move that way for a career. Always off on school trips down to the coast and he's off to bloody Naples in April. Costing us a bloody fortune. :lolol:

Very similar to my choices back in the day.
History …. taught by Graham Potter.
Geography
Classical Civilisation
Economics
Business Studies

I love the social sciences, earth sciences and arts, whilst the last two come easy.

I did a psychology module at uni. Some interesting case studies, but it’s very technical and dry, not at all like the perception you might have of the analysis of dreams, a real world aid to life/interactions/mental health.

How I would have loved that choice, IIRC when I was at school you were just told what GCEs you were doing :shrug:

My kids went to Stringer and had a similar choice of some great subjects. I remember my son choosing Philosophy and Ethics as an option, and has since said "great subject, but for a 14 year old ?" :lolol:

English Literature & Language, History, Latin, Psychology, Sociology.

As with most of my educations all these subjects are very interesting and won't ever give a me a job anywhere.
