The word offside doesn't originate from being on one side or another of a line, but from the lazy school kids who didn't engage themselves in playing/going for the ball and thus was "off their side/team", as in "not participating enough". I guess it was kept when the game became professional because how effective it was to be standing somewhere else when the other 21 players all ganged up on the ball, which was how football was generally played in the very early days.

If I saw a wasp with a body the size of a cricket ball I would shit myself.
It's ok, just checked and got my scale wrong, biggest insect by weight is about 2 1/2 Ounces. Badminton racket would sort that.

If you want to know more things that you never knew about Malta, listen to Mark Steel's in town.

He refers to the island's British/Italian heritage and asks the live audience "so which side of the road do you drive on, then?" and they all reply in unison "We drive in the shade!".

(He's also 'done' Brighton).
Great series. Was the first thing I thought about when driving in Malta first cropped up. He has also done Hastings and Lewes (which is bloody brilliant)

On the Beach
I found out last year that the cliffs around Newhaven Fort were used by the US Rangers before D-Day, to prepare for climbing the bluffs at Pointe du Hoc in Normandy.

Also, my wife was amazed that there was no such thing as a Halle Berry. She had always thought it was a genuine fruit that the actress had been named after....who'd a thunk it?!
