And I thought Chelsea were taking the piss :D

He'll be almost 34 when it ends, so his whole career tied up..

Longer than Messi's 9 year deal signed in 2005 with Barcelona. Just shy of Denilson's incredible, and ill-fated, 10-year deal.

That's a massive bet by player and club on no significant punishment.

A massive bet. Because, if they end up in League 2, i'm not sure how they are paying for it without the TV or Europe money for at least a few years. There will still be loss restrictions whatever league they are in.

It's almost like they are upping the ante. Daring the authorities to go lightly on them on for risk of overturning the whole club

Pretty sure they will be extensive clauses and caveats etc.

I don't think there is any chance they end up in League 2.
Premier League can't make that decision.
They can force a relegation to Championship by points deduction, but after that, EFL FFP rules kick in and City won't be in breach of them.

Suspect Championship football would suit Haaland down to the ground.
He might enjoy seeing how many records he can break down there for a season.

A points deduction could relegate them but (AIUI) expulsion from the league would mean the FL aren't obliged to accept them. They could end up in the National league north (hopefully)

I don't think the Premier League can afford the legal fees that expulsion would lead to.
It's questionable as to whether they have the bollocks to dish out a meaningful points penalty.
I can see them chickening out with a 40 pt penalty, giving City the wiggle room necessary to stay up.

I've heard TALK of multi year points deductions.

Never seen this mentioned, but a good idea.
I guess it would keep City in the EPL so TV money and sponsorship would stay along with the players. But no chance of a title or European football for a few years unless they win the cups, which they do anyway. Win the Conference League into the Europa. Win that and back in the UCL. Simple.

A points deduction would be ridiculous (a fine even more so) and completely spineless. It would give the green light to Newcastle and potentially others to spend massively, win loads, and then do a year in the Championship as a penance; they would even factor it in to their plans.

So I think you're right.

I disagree.

A lot is made about money being the only factor in Manchester city's success.
There are other clubs who have tried to buy themselves to the top and failed.

Newcastle are a long way off, being the club that City are, both on and off the pitch.
They couldn't afford a year in the championship.
It would be devastating to their ability to sign and retain top talent.

The talk is City know the punishment won’t involve relegation and that's why they've spent big this transfer window / Haarland would never have signed 9yrs if he's going to be playing outside the PL next season. And besides, I think the Championship might reject Citeh taking a berth, the FL might have something to say about that also. Nope, I cynically expect leniency because with enough money everything and everyone can be bought. It's called corruption. Or humankind. You choose.

City had a 10+ year run at being able to spend whatever they liked, unchecked, and when the rules were tightened they allegedly cheated them, hence the charges. Newcastle are bound by PSR since the new cash, hence why we now have Minteh and Forest have Anderson.
One season in the Championship would do nothing to them, they would loan half their squad out, convince superstars to stay for 1 'fun' season and could absorb it in the 3 year financial reporting cycle, 2 years though would hurt.

Why should the PL have to force the EFL to do it? City fighting their way back from League 2 to the PL over 3 or 4 seasons would be highly beneficial to the EFL. All this nonsense about the EFL not wanting City in their leagues ........................................pffft!
