When or if Kjell Scherpen makes his debut in the Premier League, he will be the tallest ever player to compete in the competition of all time at 206cms.

I had to look this up as it seems so counter intuitive

very few people know how they ride a bike, lots can ride but not so many know how the physics work

When you lean slightly to turn, most people think you lean slightly the way you want to go-but you actually dont. Cycling works very counter intuitively. steer gently to the right and you will go left,

When you lean to the right for example the bike goes right, but not because of the reason you may think. When you lean right with your torso-your lower half moves left-and thats the greater weight so you turn right because MOST of your body's mass is leaning to the left

Easy to prove, next time you are cycling-along a straight quiet road-marine parade cycle lane is ideal. Cycle straight and then rest one hand on top of the bar, exerting no pressure causing the wheel to turn. then with the other hand gently turn the wheel towards the resting hand, the bike will move in the opposite direction

This is why, if you are cycling next to a kerb it sometimes feels like the kerb is sucking you into it, as you turn away from the kerb, you are actually moving the bike into it

Its the same reason that if you slide on ice you steer INTO the slide to come out of it

I found out today that tennis now has a ten-point tie-break if the last set game score reaches 6-6. It was introduced almost three years ago, apparently.
I've just seen this on twitter:-

I guess I wasn't the only one who failed to notice this rule change!

I love a geography fact like this. Here are a couple more in a similar vein:

The northernmost point in Brazil is closer to Canada than it is to the south of Brazil. What's more, its most easterly point is closer to Africa than it is to western Brazil.

Algiers is closer to London than it is to the south of Algeria.

Today I learned that Bristol Rovers nickname is The Gas -

Their official nickname is The Pirates, The Gas is really a fans nickname of their team or unofficial nickname

Can't remember when or where I first this but emoticon and emoji are not etymologically linked.

Emoticon is a portmanteau from emotion and icon.

Emoji is the Japanese word for pictograph, deriving from e (picture) and moji (character).

Whenever you see a film with scary giant insects such as Ants or Wasps the size of cattle, don't be afraid. Insects do not have lungs and breathe using osmosis/concentration gradient via tubes that run through their bodies. The laws of Physics mean that no insect with a body larger than about a cricket ball can physically exist.
If I saw a wasp with a body the size of a cricket ball I would shit myself.

This. Been a few years now since I visted some exotic country but the worst thing about those travels is always the reminder that the places are flooded with all kinds of gigantic insects. Doesn't matter how harmless they are, some situations still feels like you're in a bad 1950s horror movie.

Having played cricket since I was 12 I found out yesterday, thanks to Only Connect, that cricket pitches should be laid on a north / south line so that the batsmen don’t get the sun in their eyes in the evening.

I got the connection correct too, thanks to knowing that dogs poo north to south when there are normal magnetic conditions.

I have had a dog for three years and been a cricket fan for over 40.
Used to love being a loopy leg spinner at Henfield back in the day when they had east/west facing square. Just toss it up into the sun!
