[Football] The corner problem

Corners are so frustrating now with the holding etc. How about we scrap them for something else. Perhaps something like a free kick on the centre spot to let the team build an attack again.

There must be something better…suggestions?

I don't mind a corner as it goes. However can they scrap this nonsense of having the ball outside (but part of it over) the marked area. Just make the marked corner larger and say the ball has to touch within it. Bloody obvious isn't it?

I'd change the rule so as soon as the ball is put down for the corner the action has started. Then if there is holding/fouls etc the ref can either point to the spot or for a foul to the defending team. None of this nonsense that every corner the ref stops the play so tell a random two players not to hold etc. Drives me mad - wastes so much time and doesn't stop anything.

Totally right, except that the result of the foul is so asymmetrical… can’t help thinking it would just encourage every attacking team to engage in all the holding nonsense even more, in the hope of the defending team being penalised.
Conceding a goal kick would be well-worth risking.

True. I guess it might be a risk worth taking. Either way this farce of the ref stopping every single corner has to be stopped.

A rule where nobody but the keeper is allowed in the six yard box would make it interesting, should mean more space and more interesting tactics, plus fewer cheap free kicks for fouls on the keeper

It wouldn’t be a problem if the ref just penalised it either way. It would soon then stop. It has now got to the stage where a pundit recentry said he had grabbed his shirt but only a short tug ( oh err ) so “ not enough for a foul”

I made that suggestion the other day. Or at least the attacking team aren't allowed in the six yard box

It’s the same rule for the ball being over the line anywhere else on the pitch, why should the corner taking area be different?

We don't score when we swing the ball in, so play it near to the corner of the box and cross from there. Far more dangerous and hard to defend.

We don't really have very good crossers of the ball, all our wingers are cut inside wingers. We've never really had a good one as even Gross was better with long balls through rather than crosses.

Interesting idea. Of course, in the age of VAR that’d mean we’d then need a 5 minute delay after every meaningful corner so they could check whether someone’s toenail was touching the line.

Put those electric things in the shirts so a player gets a shock if they enter the box before the ball is kicked.

I agree completely. A bit of me dies every time the ref blows up then wanders over for his 10 second lecture with the "hands apart" motion. Tedious. A few penalties will knock it all on the head.

I suggest if any attacker is fouling anyone then the ref gives a free kick (regardless of if any defenders are also fouling). If no attackers are fouling and any defender is fouling then give a penalty.

Could try a couple of things like hockey.

A penalty corner - if the ball if knocked off the back of the pitch on purpose then you have the goalie and four defenders on the goal line and then from the attacking side kick it to someone outside the box. The game carries on from there. All other defenders at halfway. Attackers as many forward as they like.

A normal corner - if ball unintentionally kicked out for corner then a restart 25 yards from goal in line with where it went out. The ball would need to go five yards before going into the box.

I have absolutely no idea if either would work but it might be fun to try.

Football should definitely adopt the self pass rule from hockey where a fouled player can take it to themselves. So if fouled you can just dribble it and if someone touches you without retreating they are booked.

I dont think we should try scrapping offside because unlike hockey it is too easy to go over the top.
