Has anyone done one of these? We're trying to think of a way to engage our depressive (adult) son to engage with some mood lifting, outdoorsy stuff. He's a Lord of the Rings fan, and something like this might be good. It just seems very expensive for what you get. Or is it worth it?

If you’re referring to the Lord of the Rings walking thing, it’s hugely expensive for what it is, to be honest.

You basically get an app which tracks your progress as you travel from the Shire to Mordor. It uses the phone’s built in pedometer to measure your steps and then gives you a graphical interface showing where you’d be if you’d walked that far in Middle Earth. When you reach points on the journey it gives you photos of the location and a bit of blurb about the story, and tells you how far you’ve come, how far to go, and how long it’d take at your current daily pace.

There’s five challenges in the regular set (£159.95) or 7 in the complete bundle (£239.95). These are permanently “on sale” with the “regular price” being around 20% higher, but I’ve never seen them actually on sale at the full price.

The gimmick is when you finish a challenge, you enter your address and they mail you a nice (but mass produced) medal in a box.

That’s basically it. It’s a step counter with Lord of the Rings branding, plus a medal for each leg of the journey.

But… I do strongly recommend instead the app “Fantasy Hike”. It’s basically the Aldi home brand version and extremely similar (which is why Conqueror have tried unsuccessfully to sue them). This is the one I use.

You don’t get the medals, the names are changed (see pic - “The Strutting Pony” instead of “The Prancing Pony” ) but it’s otherwise near identical, with the map, the distances, the photos all legally distinct replicas.

And it costs around a fiver or less, rather than £160, so if you aren’t bothered about being “Mr Underhill” rather than Frodo, or the medals, this is the best option by far.

On a serious note, and nowt to do with LOTR, have you considered a petting farm experience? Never yet met anybody who didn't have their mood lifted by pygmy goats bouncing around in comical fashion

And I’ll also add this: I don’t know your son obviously, but a fiver is much better to write off as an experiment rather than £160. You can buy the official challenges individually for about £40 each I think, so you could just get one and see if he gets on with it, maybe the medal will motivate him, I don’t know.

Thank you, that's really useful to know. We'll have a look - hopefully he'll not be too much of a purist to snub the Aldi version!
