£70k I wouldn't say is accurate for some companies, some long distance, long term drivers, yes, but the majority is less than that.
An ex colleague left financial services via redundancy and has been driving for South Western for 7 or so years now. Said his basic was £65k but he was doing an extra 25k a year in overtime (I wasn’t convinced initially but seems more believable now)

Depends what depot, I know they have a lot of different driver links. Doesn't surprise me about the overtime though. Maybe they can pay me £25k overtime :lolol:

You haven't got the spare time to DO any overtime. How would you fit in 250 football matches a season?

Lives in Watford so assume Watford Junction but have no idea of the coverage of these northern outposts

Within 20 years I suspect trains will be self driving anyway. Scary thought, but likely.

Good luck with that, maybe they can dovetail with the self-driving flying cars and hoverboards to create a truly joined up transport system?

Why scary, the DLR has been driverless since it opened, I don't recall any crashes on the system. The technology is there, you just need a government with a pair of balls to stand up to the rail unions.

And about a trillion pounds burning a hole in its pocket.

The DLR is an entirely self-contained, relatively small network running a single type of train on a regular stopping pattern with no conflicting freight movements or fast / semi-fast services.

Personally I believe if the government had that amount of money going spare there about 3 million things I can imagine it being spent on than butchering the railway network out of spite for the workers.

They've successfully trialled driverless freight trains in China.
Then again, I don't suppose President Xi takes his orders from the RMT and Aslef like Starmer does.

They also don’t care very much about safety. Driverless and driven trains mixing is an accident waiting to happen.
