Forcing people to vote?
We are forced to vote in Australia, doesn't feel right to me.. Although I understand the benefits it feels undemocratic to be forced to participate in democracy.

So democracy for only the well-informed enough to vote for the correct choice?
I think we should try blind voting. Pick the policies that you would like to see implemented and that is matched to the parties manifesto and your vote cast accordningly.

**disclaimer** this is a partially tounge in cheek comment as I understand the pitfalls and limitations of this idea. Although I do like the idea of taking away the spin and personality cults involved in politics.

There are some websites which do this, the results can be surprising.

This is one:

Forced to turn up to vote, not actually vote.

A spoilt paper counts as a vote in Australia ?

And if you don't vote (and they bother to come after you) you get fined 20 dollars.

Correct me if anything of the above isn't true.

I'm with you, forcing people to vote in a democracy is silly. If only 50% turn up to vote (or less) statistically that's a good sample and many many things in life that affect our daily lives are decided on much less.

Yeah I have seen those, people always seem to be more left than you'd expect. Although this may be to do with the algorithms used to make the decision.

I'll try this one later.

No. Which is why at the moment everyone has the right to vote. Democracy should not be built on a complete lottery. Do you honestly think that people who don’t currently vote will appreciate being forced to?

It strikes me as a little ironic that you imply that it is more democratic to force people who do not currently choose to vote that they must vote. What about the right to choose? Isnt forcing people to do something the opposite of democracy?

Pretty much, might be $50 now.

So 'forced' might be an overstatement.

I do wonder what difference it makes though.

That was interesting, though I had no idea 'woke capitalism' existed as an ideology

Less people should be allowed to vote. If you voted for Brexit, ukup, reform or any reality TV show you should not be allowed to vote for 5 years.

*disclaimer* this is a tounge in cheek comment I don't really think this.

All I'll say is that Faridge doesn't deserve the quality of discussion this thread has turned into.
But, as to your comment I've highlighted, disagree. And there's precedent behind it.
Voting (for a representative) used to be the aristocratic device par excellence.
Democrats, consequently, hated voting. Voting is a method of selection. There are two other methods of selection that were instead deployed by democracies. One was rotation. The other was lottery/sortition.

I came out with Volt UK as my recommended party with 81% - and I’ve never heard of them. SNP second, Tories a distant third.

Had to Google them, and apparently they’re a Pro EU protest party who put out two candidates last year, not coming close to a seat

Where were you when they needed you 😂

SNP were close to the top for me with the Tories way down the list. Interesting they were second and third for you.

I like how detailed your link is. It suggests there is a great deal of nuance in ourbpolicual outlooks and brings into question the logic of a two party system.

Fascinating - and pretty accurate I would say. Better than some of those I've tried.
