BBC 2 now or on Iplayer.

Sir Richard Burton at the top of his game, cementing his legacy as one of the finest British actors to ever grace the silver screen. 🍾
Got it on DVD

I was taken to this at the cinema by my mum as an 11th birthday present.
That's my 11th, not my mum's, before any wag piles in

(I was expecting you to be telling is that Clint Eastwood had carked it, by the way  )

Brilliant, brilliant film.
Was due to visit the Schloß Adler in 2020 until Covid erupted.

I believe Darren Nesbitt who played Major von Hapen has lived in Brighton / Worthing for a while.

What a last line for a film:

Do me a favour, will you? Next time you have one of these things, keep it an all-British operation.
I'll try, Lieutenant.

Bit of film trivia… you can see the Schloß Adler in the background during The Sound of Music:

Saw it for the first time myself at The Dome Cinema in Sept 1975.

Believe it had its TV network premiere on BBC One on 25th December 1977*, after the legendary Morecambe and Wise Show.

*Still the largest TV audiences ever, Larry Grayson’s Generation Game, The Mike Yarwood Show and then Eric and Ernie, ironically Yarwood is still credited as having the largest audience figure that night, which was put down to people travelling home during Eric and Ernie.

Word is Burton was drinking heavily and a tad depressed during the making of this, often missing days filming.

Only a few days after A Bridge Too Far was on as well, two of the best war films going

Yet still turned in a performance like that.

Nominated 7 times for an Oscar before his death in 1984 but unbelievably never won one.

If you look on You Tube you can find an edited collection of Lt Shaffer's ( Clint ) kill count...quite an impressive total.
