[Albion] Leaving a man (or 3) up when defending a corner

It was very clever. I think we should employ it all the time as

1) It means the goalkeeper isn’t sandwiched between two players as much
2) There is much more space in the box, less blocking, making it easier to mark players.
3) Makes the attacking team more nervy as they have to think not only about attacking but conceding possession; if they give the ball away there’s an immediate 3 v 3 counter attack.
Lee Dixon on the commentary, made the same points and gave the coaches credit for picking up on this. I was unaware that Monaco had started doing this in the CL.

It's good that Hurzeler has been reading NSC and taking our advice to leave player(s) on the half way line at corners - let's hope he reads this too and drums the message into Verbruggen!
Maybe he does, he was having a few drinks in the Wagon and Horses on NYE, Shirley a man of his age should be desperately hanging onto this youth down West street?

I wasn’t there. Who were the 3 and can someone post a photo of their positioning as Arse took a corner, please?
This is the only corner shot I can find. Others were a bit different and all three players closely marked as @Paulie Gualtieri said ... but gives you an idea.

It only works if the team refuses to take a short corner. If they play it short suddenly there is acres of space to play into the box.

Good tactic to nullify long ball arsenal but wouldn’t work against a more conservative team from dead balls.

If the opponents take a sort corner it will be similar to an attack down to the goal-line in open play. I don’t see this as an big issue.

My abiding memory of the World Cup in Japan/Korea was Brazil defending a corner. The camera would pan to Ronaldinho and the real Ronaldo chatting on the half way line taking no interest in the corner at all. They couldn’t give a toss and were waiting for the long ball out of defence. It was heartwarming!

Except everyone will be static marking their zones or man marking, unlike an attack in open play. Plus we’d have to lose a body from the middle to close the short corner and the potential pass back to the corner taker. More space in the middle and less congestion could be more dangerous.

The team taking the short corner would still be highly concerned about the three forwards. Just one blunder by them or an Albion clearance away from a run in on goal. A numbers game, they’d have to leave a load of defending players back.

I recall an excellent bit of commentary from Lawro when Ronaldinho and ANO stayed up in a Brazil WC match (might even have been the Seaman flap match against England) and were taking absolutely no notice of the corner. "They don't want to be bothered defending a corner, much rather have a chat in the centre circle".

I think in the first half, it was Gruda, Adingra, Ayari ( all the little ones)
It appeared we put 2 on the right wing and 1 on the left. So, 2nd half is was Minteh, Georghino and Rutter in the right and Mitoma on the left. We didn't place anyone centrally.

I’ve read about that very recently
