[Technology] WiFi range extender

Hi all,

Recently upgraded to full fibre from Community Fibre and binning off the awful BT Infinity we had.

It's super duper fast which is great. (Getting consistent over 700mps over WiFi) But it's struggling to reach our youngest daughters bedroom at the other end of the flat. Her room is literally in the opposite corner of the place and every wall in-between is brick, no plasterboard in sight here.

We've got the Nokia Beacon 2 router that CF provided and I'm pretty sure we can add a booster along the hallway to help it along there.

Chatting to the installers on the day he said that this router was "mesh" compatible and to get a TP6 link if we needed one.

I've got no idea what that means.

Can anyone recommend a booster that will work with this router?

As reasonably priced as possible please! Don't mind going up to about £60 if they're that cheap..... I'm clueless.

Cheap, reliable, easy. Pick two.

To get internet in my workshop and the garden I ran a cable from the front of the house to the workshop and fitted an old router there (turn off DHCP on it and set the SSID to the same as the main router).

Mesh basically means the WiFi gets distributed between the routers around the house. It counts as a single network, so your devices will automatically switch between whichever router has the strongest signal.

I have Tp-Link Deco routers for my Mesh network. You might be able to pick one up for your price range.

Just installed some TP Link Deco X20s as an upgrade to my old Tenda Nova mesh. Very easy to install.

A mesh system is the way to go. I used to have WiFi extenders (the type you plug into an electrical socket and they seemed to work against each other). I invested in a three unit Deco mesh system 3 years ago and have never had any issues since with the benefit of getting Wi-Fi at the end of my garden and in places in our 1930s house the Wi-Fi extenders didn’t seem to reach before.

I use TP link one mesh that works very well and is relatively cheap.

On this subject, I've just updated to a wifi6 router but it's not DSL compatible so I need to use the plusnet router as a modem.

Can anyone tell me how I set the plusnet hub2 to bridging/modem only!!!??? I've scoured the interent but can't find out where it is on the modem settings menu.

Another vote for Deco, got the XE75s running Wifi6E, always had issues in the garden office with BT router/wifi, not anymore consistent connection almost to the advertised max.

TP Deco Mesh for me too, total game changer compared to ‘range extenders’. Worth every penny, even if it goes a bit above you budget.

This is very basic, but I have the "included" Vodafone WiFi booster thingy which is included with their broadband plus (or something). Live in a three storey house and that did the job for me, boosting the speed in the top floor bedroom to near enough the maximum that I get downstairs by the router.

I believe the Vodafone one is wifi6, maybe mesh also

I’ve got a simple Tenda Mesh 3 box system, works perfectly with my fibre BB including covering the whole garden from a unit in the kitchen (which in turn covers things like the security camera and bird nest boxes)

Plusnet hubs are rebranded BT smart hubs.

I bought a two box Nova mesh wifi about 8 years ago for approx £70 and it covers the whole house and down to the bottom of c70ft garden and never had an issue since. I'm sure the more modern ones recommended above will be even better. It replaced an extender that was always dropping out.

Deco Mesh here too.

Big advantage is that because the providers router is in modem mode, you can change supplier, swap the routers but your network remains the same including passwords etc.

Extenders are a waste of time really unless you specifically wanted a separate network, but even then the Mesh allows you to create a ‘guest’ network along side your main one.
