[Albion] How much is Joao Pedro worth?

if he carries on he’ll be worth 50p and a bag of quavers by next month.

in all seriousness, i don’t understand where this idea that he’s checked out, had his heard turned or has a poor attitude comes from. everyone with a pair of eyes can see that leading the line as an out-and-out striker doesn’t suit him, it’s like asking him to play with his hands tied behind his back, so no wonder he looks frustrated. he’s our best player on his day, and after the bournemouth game i was almost upset because he was that good there was an air of inevitability that he would be sold in the summer. how quickly that seems to have changed.

i also don’t know the laws of the game, but clattenburg seemed fairly adamant last night that no contact means no card. surely that means there’s nothing for them to look at again?

He's BEHIND the player. It's a (misguided) gesture, not an attempt to hit the player.

Ref, VAR and even Mark Clattenburg agree.
And some will say the intent, think all the commentators agreed it should've been a red. I expect Dermot will have a view

How is he behind the player? If you look at the first picture when Joao Pedro has started his elbow movement, do you think the Brentford player is a) behind him or b) in front of him?

I've heard the "but he's behind the Brentford player" a number of times now and can't really get my head around how that is possible when every single photo and video shows Joao Pedro first ahead and then next to the player. If you draw a line at the photo above and try to figure out who is closest to the mid line, is it JP or the Brentford player?

There was no intent to actually hit him. Ref, VAR and Clattenburg all have that 'view'.

Meanwhile, commentators, radio hosts and engagement farmers all desperate for an angle in a dull game....

From Sky Sports:

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg, speaking to Amazon Prime said: "If we look at the laws of the game as it's written, it has to be 'to strike an opponent or attempt to strike an opponent'.

"Because there was no contact he can't be sent off the field of play for the contact. Therefore, it's whether he attempted to strike the opponent.

"The more I look at it, because it's an unusual action, especially from behind he is looking towards Andy Madley when he swings his arm. He keeps his arm quite close to his body and I think it's more of a gesture to the referee.

"Andy Madley is in a very good position. Joao Pedro couldn't have been sent off for the contact but he could have been sent off for the attempted contact. I believe it's a gesture more than an attempted strike.

"I think Joao Pedro makes a gesture to the referee but if he wanted to swing and use brutality he would have swung his arm out and created contact."

Could have done us all a favour and got sent off. He's blowing cold at the moment, so acting up like a spoilt child not getting his own way after christmas dinner is not helping.
He's not as good as he thinks he is.

Yes, agreed. Very lucky tonight imo that the player wasn't closer/made a meal of it.

I'd point out that this angle does make it look as bad as could be, though

If the Brentford player had made a meal of it, that would be an automatic yellow for simulation AKA lying.

Why would he not think so?

Like I said in the summer -
He's a good player. The £100m future £100m doesn't happen if he doesn't improve his non-penalty goal scoring, and that doesn't happen if he doesn't improve his decision making. He still has lots to learn about when to pass, when to dribble, when to shoot and when not to.

Think he is developing in the right direction and he seems to have right mentality to be able to fulfill his potential.

Naturally it was met with "gOalS aRE goAALS!!!!" and it seems JP and De Zerbi felt the same way so we were perfectly happy with our "marquee" signing that year having the non-penalty stats of Neal Maupay. People actually think Liverpool are going to pay £100m for a player who has scored 9 non-penalty goals in 43 Premier League appearances.

RDZ, the fans and the media made him think he is a £100m superstar when he's actually a bang average PL striker with the potential to be a top one.

I have a lot of faith in JP improving his game and finding his form to make him a nice summer sale but all of that turns into shit if he doesn't realise he needs to improve pretty much everything if he wants to play in a really big club.

He's developed an annoying habit of running into 2-3 players and losing the ball. Did it several times last night.

Not sure if it's not seeing the pass, thinking that he's better than he is or trying just too hard to force something.

Think it's the last one personally.

I can't recall a player playing so far below his capability for years, that said, my memory isn't what it used to be.

Been doing it loads recently, running blindly into opposition players and losing the ball and/or chucking himself to the ground. Drove me f***ing nuts when he did it again at the end yesterday. Just shield the ball and find a pass ffs.

Then he was coming back to halfway trying to win the ball back, and if he did win it back there's nobody there to pass to because it's him that's meant to be up there!

Good post. Really not sure who this guy thinks he is. If he wasn't Brazilian no one would be talking about him. His goal ratio without pens is the same as wellbeck. And I prefer wellbeck.

They can’t believe it’s not a red card, and quote the same portion of the relevant Law I did in the other thread (which I can’t find).

He got very lucky.
