You can start waving your arms at the crowd when the crowd start to see something worth cheering.

Yes, we need atmosphere, but that gets generated by quality entertainment on the pitch.

I’ve seen a few of our players do these frustrated hand gestures at the Amex recently. It is no more likely to make me cheer more loudly than goal music.

You’re all paid handsome amounts of cash and you practice all week. Put in a shift on the pitch and the crowd will put in a shift in the stands.

Meh, they have good intentions? Surely thats the main thing? They come from cultures where they ask for support and energy when they need it, and they get it. They don't understand that support in the Premier League is something you get when things go well, so you won't get it until you've done well.

They will learn quickly not to try to fire up the crowd so I don't think you have much to worry about. Tonight could well be a nice and quiet 1-1 game without players waving their arms, smile, breath or doing anything else that might upset the clearly exceptionally sensitive people at the Amex.

Ffs. What a thing to moan about. The players don't mean any harm, they just want your f***ing help.

Definitely seems to be happening a lot more in the games I watch on TV as well as at the Amex. It's not high up my list of things to worry about in 2025 but I think it's best reserved for those moments in matches when a real sense of urgency has kicked in and an already feverish crowd is being urged to crank noise levels up to 11.

When it's done in the first three minutes of a game when half the players are yet to even kick the ball, it's meaningless.

I think quite often the crowd do respond positively, which can only do good. If it gets the crowd going, and that gives our players a lift, and affects the opposition negatively as well, then happy days.

Don't mind it at all personally. (But then I don't go along with the action/performance on the pitch should be the catalyst for an atmosphere. There should be an atmosphere regardless imho)

Anyhow, players are doing it too much and in some sort of aggressive entitled way. By all means get excited WITH the crowd, but looking like you’re moaning at them? Nah. Stop it.

This is a stark reminder that the Amex atmosphere is utter shite, and a lot of our fans are so entitled, they will only be prepared to support the side when entertained.

Players trying to spur on the wanky Amex crowd is the correct thing for them to do... encouraging the fans to be the 12th man to push the team on to victory. The failure of the fans to react is exactly why we will never be able to compete with teams like Liverpool.

I have never been irritated or frustrated by a player doing this, it shows nothing more than they care, if fans don't like it perhaps they feel insulted by their own performance in supporting their side. Nothing to see in my opinion.
I am wondering if this is one of the posters who like to stir things up somewhat, bugger I've bitten!

I don’t feel strongly about the OP’s pov either way - it does looks a bit sad and cringey when we have players feeling they have to drum up our support and start conducting a glum and silent East Stand to make some noise. In some ways, I think a little bit of that might be some of the younger ones diverting responsibility for lack lustre performance onto the crowd. However, I my desire wouldn’t be for players to stop that if it helps them get focussed and energised,

I would say however, that it’s a sad indictment on any Club when it’s players can’t hear enough support from the stands and feel the fans aren’t behind them - it is us really who should be making more noise.

Football is very performative at this level and all performers need an appreciative audience however much they are being paid to get the job done.
