SHOREHAM BY SEA
Though minus 10 pts for the cringe scene as the PoW camp is liberated, and all that matters is our hero climbing the flagpole to replace the German flag with the Stars & Stripes while every prisoner, guard, liberator etc stops what they’re doing to cheer, cry and generally wet themselves as the music swells and a tidal wave of God Bless Murica schmaltz gushes across the screen.
I’m a sucker for the music

On a separate note I might have a gander at the book written by Harry Crosby ….the navigator played by Anthony Boyle

Endured through it but ultimately it’s been dull as dishwater. Felt like the same events every episode rinse and repeat.

I really enjoyed it but this is the main issue they had. How many ways can you show bombers fly to drop bombs on a different target and get shot at. Some survive. Some don’t. The only progress you felt was when the luftwaffe were beaten so they didn’t get shot at by planes anymore.

Band of brothers and to a lesser extent the pacific had lots of different battles in different contexts to show.

Earlier in the thread I asked if bomber pilots were people not good enough to be fighter pilots. It seems less skilled but I might be missing something. Almost like being a HGV driver compared to a racing car driver.

band of brothers is intense & epic in many ways. masters of the air is a smaltzy, cliched & hack in comparison. it is watchable, but there is no comparison as to which conveys the sheer terror of war

West is BEST
I gave up after episode 4 or 5, I lost track. I gave up partly because it’s shite and partly because there were so many un-flagged spoilers on here.

Been catching up on this. Very good CGI to show many planes at once and the planes back on the ground shot to bits.

Tool up 3 month offer with new mobile provider, just finished episode 5 and have to say enjoying it.

Huge fan of BoB and think its one of the greatest ever TV productions, but think MotA better than some of the reviews on here are suggesting.

I get there is less emotional connection with many of the characters , but for me that's part of the story. The point being they were losing so many men due to the day time bombing approach that it would be unrealistic and disingenuous to be following the core characters all the way to the end.

I always take the detail with this type of thing with a pinch of salt. Dick Winters insisted BoB be as realistic as possible, but conceded there had to be some dramatic license taken, but I prefer to take a wider, higher level view of what's being depicted. The reality was horrendous and I think that comes across clearly.

Difficult not to be there with them, sitting in a metal tube, flying a straight and level course and having zero control over your destiny, watching your friends die alongside you and not having some level of emotional engagement.
