That’s not the case where we sit. We sit in seats bordering the split between W3H and W3I the price either side of the mid block split is the same. In W3H the price increase happens at the aisle.
It does seem harsh but I can sort of see what the Club are trying to do if the ticket is not resold to a family or friend or put on the exchange.
I have had to do this with my fathers season ticket this year due to his ill health - he is 89. I've had no problems and the Club usually profits from it as I have to pay an upgrade to adult price or its sold on the exchange.
My problem will come next season at renewal as I would love to upgrade his season ticket to an adult for either my son or wife but this is not permitted. So I will have to decide whether to give up both my season tickets and try and rebuy them or look for another two seats together to buy as season tickets or just become a MyAlbion+ member and pick and choose games. Things were easier in the Championship

It still makes sense though - if you're mid-row you ideally need to enter from the aisle on the right side of the block for your seat. I like it - cheaper seats, and don't get bothered by the weak-bladdered, those who can't go a full 45 mins without food or drink and early leavers

It's certainly a questionable contract term - could even be considered an unfair term thus rendering it a null and void term. If you buy any product or service lets say a cinema ticket - and decide not to use the service then that's your choice. The cinema can't resell the ticket as you have paid for it. Not sure why a football club should be the exception.
What doesn't help is the constant moving of fixtures for TV. As an example, I give the fixtures list in June to Mrs WS and she arranges our social and holiday lives around those dates for the next few months. She fully understands there could be date moves but some things need to be arranged well before the match dates are moved. The June released fixture list shouldn't be released until the TV companies have provided what they want to show for the WHOLE season. Pretty sure that would mean more STH bums on seats and less use of the exchange.
So the club want you to enter a contract with questionable T&Cs before the service delivery dates are confirmed and even before the previous contract ( i.e. season ) has ended.
All in all I'm on the OP's mates side - I thought our club was meant to be for the supporters not enforcing some daft contractual T&Cs.

That is ridiculous if you can`t keep your Dads ticket in the Family. Even more so than some of the other probs with ticket sharing.
Thanks for your backing but i believe that is the case . I have seen similar posts from others confirming this is the Club;s stance.
I shall phone them in the near year and double check but I'm not hopeful.
Think so - it's a tricky one though as they'd potentially be jumping the ST 'waiting list' (if there is one) if they were allowed to take over his seat I guess.........

This is quite the norm at the Albion. Someone I used to sit next to in the North died after 45 years of going. His daughter in law (I think), who he usually went with, wasn’t allowed to keep it in the family.

Yes I think this is the reason which again I understand. My wife and son are both MyAlbion+ members for sometime and I think by being a member you are automatically on the waiting list. I see the Club are flogging half season season tickets so its not full up is it ?

I haven't and I'm sure I'm older than @Beach Hut. I'm wondering whether the club are now using AI and have come to the conclusion that certain people need reminding more than others

Yeh, it’s a bit harsh but I think I agree with the club’s policy on this one on the assumption that there is a waiting list.
Anyone know what other clubs do? Allowi season tickets to be inerited runs the risk of it becoming a closed shop.
How is it anything to do with money? The ST has to be paid for whoever sits there the following season.
I have found myself in the same situation after not being able to share my ST as much as I have in previous seasons and admittedly been a bit lax with putting it on the exchange.
I gave the club a call, and as is their wont, they were exceedingly polite and patient and explained how I could use my ST from now on. It is still MY ticket, only I have to let them know when I’m going, rather than when I’m not. Seems very fair, doesn’t take long.
Although, as in the OP, I don’t believe the situation was communicated very clearly by email. I don’t recall the ‘warnings’ either.
I don’t blame the club for doing this.

It sounds like instead of keep charging him them will sell their tickets for him, sounds like a positive from the club? If you can’t attend for a while contact the club and they say they’ll sort it?
