Every morning my wife tells me supermarket x has lowered the cost of vegetables. Today it's Aldi who promise the lowest and have anounced a price of 8p
From 19 December, 1kg of carrots, 500g parsnips, 500g Brussels sprouts, 2kg white potatoes, red and white cabbages, and broccoli will be available for 8p.
My Xmas shop yesterday was just under £200 at Aldi for a party of 7. That includes beef, turkey, gammon, veg (I hate sprouts), wine, crisps, Baileys chocolate cake, other cakes that will get wasted, 5 cheeses and all the other food needed to stuff ourselves stupid.
But we always shop at Aldi and Tesco next door could be giving away veg for all I care, we'd go in and grab just the veg.
As a side, Tesco have beef joints half price with a clubcard, but Aldi is still cheaper.
So does cutting a 'must have' item on your shopping list encourage you to shop at a certain store?

Tesco did something similar last Christmas with veg at rock bottom prices if you use your club card. Presumably they want you in the doors as then you're more likely to buy other more expensive stuff.

Over the past five years we’ve moved from Sainsbury’s to Lidl as our “main” supermarket. Oddly it was having an EV charger at Lidl that made us move first, but we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of Lidl’s fresh produce and bakery sections, plus we were almost halving our weekly spend, so we slowly migrated away from Sainsbury’s.

We now treat Sainsbury’s as our parents used to treat M&S, we pop in for specifics we can’t get at Lidl, but it’s Lidl all the way for general shopping, I don’t even look at prices elsewhere.

Plus my car’s charged for the week when I come out.

We will buy the cheap veg on Monday for the big day but it doesnt suck us in for buying meat. Luckily have the benefit of 2 freezers in the garage so we tend to buy our meat back in October when its a cheaper than buying fresh now.

I just need to remember to defrost it .......

The veg in supermarkets is so flavourless to the point of being virtually inedible. It's so cheap because they've taken every possible measure to make it cheap... at the cost of flavour and to some degree nutrition.

While I do my main shopping at Tesco, I never buy the veg there. M&S & to a lesser degree Waitrose sell better produce, but it's still not very good.

I end up going to farm shops for fresh, local, high quality produce. It's about 5 times the price, but absolutely worth it.

Forgot to mention, we popped into Tesco last week as the wife wanted something only they had (think it was hair dye). Anyway it was on special but when I went to the counter I'd forgotten my clubcard. No problem thought I, asked the next customer if I could use theirs. Cashier siad I couldn't do that, so we walked out and left the item.

which is great IF you can afford it and have transport to get to a farm. Many folk aren’t in that position

You must have good fridge capacity, we’ll do it later. Lidl for the bulk of it, M&S for special bits. Yes, Aldi and Lidl save us fortunes when we make the effort to go …. lazily I keep driving to the Sainsbury’s West Hove for top-ups, expensive imho.

I love sprouts.
Aldi Portslade is only just round the corner ! I'll give you the parking can be awful - hopefully the new store at the top of Snakey will resolve that issue. That said, sometimes I can be too lazy to go to Aldi if it's just a top-up shop and use Sainsburys West Hove instead despite their shelves being increasingly empty and the ridiculous security measures.

I'm with @Official Old Man - why on earth would anyone do their Christmas food shop in Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda or Waitrose when Aldi and Lidl are so so much cheaper.

EDIT - and Sainsburys "Aldi Price Match" isn't always truthful.

Currently in Asda and seen a woman load up with about 15 bags of potatoes. If you've got the freezer space and have the time now is the perfect time to stock up and batch cook.

I'll be going out on Monday to get everything I need, which isn't a lot to be fair as I've been buying bits and pieces on the weekly shop and chucked it all in the freezer. Turkey crown is being delivered that day and I've got a decent sized gammon to collect from the local butcher on the 23rd as well.

Chuffing love Christmas dinner.

I've used that Aldi many times. It's a lazy driving thing from me of just 2 minutes on the A27 to Sainsbury's.

Did that get planning permission? I lobbied at the first instance when Aldi sent the leaflets out, for it to go ahead.

The first application was refused. Not sure about the second application. I know they were having some issues with some snobs in Westdene but I lobbied in favour for both applications.

Quality. We now refuse to buy veg and fruit in any of Aldi or Lidl and even Tescos. We buy all of this in Waitrose now and yes its more to start with but quality is much higher and produce lasts longer.

Blimey! You've put some graft into that. Thank you.

So even with a Clubcard Tesco are nearly twice the price of Aldi & Lidl. Quelle surprise. I love Aldi in Portslade.

Blimey! I have often been asked by fellow shoppers if they can "borrow" my clubcard and I always agree. They get the discount and I get the points. What's not to like? This must be a VERY recent policy change by Tesco as I've never had a till operative object and the last time I did it was only 2 weeks ago.

How to lose custom and customers! Silly Tesco.

The entire triangle of land Toad's Hole will be developed. I didn't follow the planning application, but guessed that nimbies would seize on access from Snaky Hill could be dangerous or cause mini jams.

No graft involved. That was all done by Martin Lewis and his team .
