@ Alex Scott...
It's the triathlon.

NOT Triathalon.
If you are supposed to be a professional presenter, at least pronounce the event correctly.
The exceedingly good news is Alex Scott is not getting involved in MOTD so at least that won't go to pot like Football Focus has.

A couple of observations:
- not sure how Alex Yee doesn’t even make the top 3 if Hodgkinson wins it. Was his achievement that much lesser?
- there is a public vote yet Joe Root’s third place trophy was already in place, along with Harry Brook to present it, so how does that work? What if he’d won or not got anything after the public vote? Similar comment about Jude - he wasn’t in the studio for the piece about him earlier in the show, so they were hardly going to dig him out later on if he had won it so again the public vote seems something of a joke as it seems to make no difference. It’s hardly Eurovision is it?

This I don't get either.

Is womens 800m that much bigger an even than mens triathalon?

Is Hodgkinson, that much more of a sparkling personality than Yee? For one to win and one to finish outside the placings?

They both did well to win a tough gold in a tough event. But actually you can say that for a number of our Olympians. I struggle to see what sets Hodgkinson apart. Not that I have anything against the lass

I had to explain to my horrified 12 year old after he saw the vote winner last night and his favourite, Bellingham wasn't placed, that this is miles away from being the dumbest voting outcome that the British public have decided upon.

Bewildered acceptance of his countrymen is probably something he'll just have to get used to

Having looked at the BBC's Christmas programming, SPOTY - despite its flaws - is one of the highlights.

And Alex Scott is improving as a presenter.

I said in another thread that I once won our cricket team’s most improved player of the year award, ie I was considered really s**t the year before.

Maybe they could add in a most improved sports presenter of the year award too?

You can at least tell him there is the chance to vote for someone else next year, unlike some other votes there have been in recent years.

Yee isn't much of a personality with a high media profile. This will have impacted on the number of people that will have voted for him. Compared to say littler who is a household name.

Keely has a higher media profile than yee & would get female & male votes. Yee would get votes from runners & not many more imo

Keely won Olympic gold in the stadium, on the track, competing in one of the showcase events.

Regardless of whether people think it is right or wrong, fair or unfair, Olympic golds won on the track generally capture the public imagination far more than medals won elsewhere.

And yet no one had an issue with Sir Christopher Hughton doing it in his pre/post match interviews because it was just a north London manner of speaking according to many.
Chris Hughton wasn't trying to make a career as a commentator/presenter.

I appreciate it's all down to personal taste. I'm sure there were people who couldn't stand Benaud's way of describing a score of 222-2 as "Tchoo for tchoo hun'red and tchwenty tchoo"

These are a good point.

It lost its credibility years ago IMO.

The "unsung hero" award went to a nice old granny who taught kids at a sailing club how to tie knots. And then didn't appear to know where she was and just mumbled gibberish. Then speaking of mumbling we had Sir Mark Cavendish who had a real shocker when given his Lifetime Achievement award. No disputing his award was well deserved but I never want to hear him speak again!

Disappointed Hodgkinson won after one gold medal. The GOAT won her 18th and 19th gold medals and didn't even make the top 3.

Cav has never shone at speaking publicly. Thankfully, he's the best sprinter in the history of cycling, and a worthy winner of the LA award.
