It had a rocky start but is starting to have an identity and is starting to become an interesting place with a lot of quirky and good independent places to shop.
It’s got a great bakers shop and other interesting food outlets.
The London Road and Baker Street have all benefited from development in the past few years, particularly students, and it’s a vibrant area again.
Good news.
I grew up in Brighton and regularly went there or just walked through to London Road.
There was a shoe stall there in the late 70s and I got my first pair of Dr Martens bought for me buy my mum, think I told her they would be much better than any school shoes

more a case of what wasn't he selling, there were thousands of books in his stall and also on several tables and bookcases outside his stall. I often had a look at what was there-basically a bit of everything
The market has become much better over the past couple of years-especially Friday and Saturday when all the central space is full of stalls. At Christmas time its much much more of a Christmas market than the "official" one we have had at St Peters Church.
That's good to hear. I haven't been for years, as since the redevelopment I always found it sparsely-populated and very underwhelming. Now I just walk past the entrance(s) without going in, so I will next time. I'm a big fan of the London Road area (and Lewes Road as well) as they've always been 'proper' high streets. If the Open Market is now a vibrant hub that will be an excellent addition.

Also, Andy Mears (yes, same family) who ran the fishmongers has recently died after being diagnosed with cancer about a year ago. One of his 3 or 4 daughters is carrying on the business at least in the short term. He was a great bloke and looked after his customers well. On my 60th birthday during lockdown he opened up his stall so MrsBC could collect a surprise fruit de mer he had put together for me.

And Smorls, the Korean place next door, Sunbirds etc etc.
That's sad to hear. I noticed that it was his daughter that was running the show, I hadn't realised that he'd died (nor that he was a Mears). It's a great fish shop, really helpful in preparing the fish how you want it and advising on cooking it.
I'm a big fan of the Open Market, I do a lot of my shopping there - the veg in particular is better than the stuff from supermarkets.

Always get my eggs, bacon and cheese from Ovett's. And can never resist some pick 'n' mix mini sausage rolls from This Little Piggy. Oh, and a bag of samosas from Mohammed - Spice Of Life
