God they are thick. If dying children....CHILDREN can't persuade you that maybe your little shooty shooty toy isn't that important then I don't think there's ever any hope.

"It's not the guns fault. We just needed armed security guards at every school and stricter gun laws"

Yeah, because a child has never taken anything from their parents before. Also it's a slightly one sided battle if one person (the kid with the gun who wants to kill that day) is confronted by a security guard who isn't going to be poised for immediate warfare like he's playing Call of Duty. Bang, get him out the way and off we go.

What a mental country.

When Sandy Hook happened and still nothing changed, it was abundantly clear that NOTHING will ever be passed to alter their "constitutional rights".

Firearms are just far too macho and exciting to Americans for them ever to be properly controlled. And the NRA are too firmly embedded in the establishment for that ever to be challenged.

The constant bloodshed of the innocent and vulnerable is to them still, and always, a price well worth paying.

I believe the statistics show that the majority of US citizens support tighter gun control. The fact that the NRA et Al are choking any change is testement to how well their democracy works.

It's just lucky that the majority in the UK get what they voted for ......... oh

Indeed.

Sadly the "YEE HAW" brigade who still think they are living on the Frontiers in 1863 are the ones who screech the loudest whenever sensible policies are floated to try to stem the bloodshed. Firmly backed up by the NRA.

They are beyond salvation. As one horrific massacre leads to another, nothing will ever change there. No matter what.

I’m of the view that if the majority of US really and truly did want tighter gun control they could achieve it. But this is a nation which has just handed Trump a second term and a second term with a big win. f*** ‘em. Let them get on with it but I hope the EU and the U.K. keep a distance from the country. I guess it’s a bit different for the U.K. due to the “special relationship “….whatever this exactly means, but we should both row back a bit.

And for political balance, this is also a nation where gun-owning VP and Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris said to Oprah in September that "if somebody breaks into my house, they're getting shot".

If senior elected politicians are choosing guns even for home security, there's clearly little hope of behavioural change from the American public.

Whilst there's admittedly more open Republican support than Democrat, a plague on both their houses here.

I had a trip to Kenosha, Wisconsin this past week and I was so glad the incident wasn't in Kenosha County.

My former brother-in-law (brother of my ex-wife) lives in the Madison area but luckily he lives in Fitchburg and not in Monona or Buckeye Rd.

We Americans are truly, unfortunately, getting used to shootings in schools on a regular basis.

Sadly, but not unsurprisingly, another mass shooting yesterday in Baltimore. One dead, 9 injured. It wont change unfortunately.

Good to see this though from Parkland School shooting survivor, and gun activist, David Hogg...although what difference he would make Im not sure.

genuine question, do you feel there will ever be a real shift against ‘the right to bear arms’ position?

The Onion has been publishing this same piece for ten years.

38 times.

And that's a fraction of the amount of times it could have been published.

Back in the late 90’s/early 2000’s I travelled to the US a fair bit. I met two gun advocates who were light years apart. One thought the right to bear arms was so he fire off semi automatic weapons in the Nevada desert 🤦‍♂. He was very much the ‘don’t take my guns’ and ‘I’ll protect my home, god dammit’ brigade. The other came from either Montana or Wyoming (can’t remember which but he apparently had to ship in sun light) as he had a lodge out in the sticks. He had rifles and hand guns predominantly for protection against bears and wolves. He also hunted deer for food, something that his family had done for donkeys year. His view on assault rifles was that they are for killing people in a war situation and had no place in the hands of civilians. He a very dim view of people who used the right to bare arms as an excuse to have anything other than a hand gun in a home. He was even then a fan of gun control in the form of strict licensing and a ‘need’ for said fire arm. Mainly too keep them out of the hands of ‘assholes’.

Alex Jones' (still) infowars still getting involved in school shootings. Fresh new take! The recent ones don't involve crisis actors, he's now claiming that the shooters are trans.

He's a ****

My sister lives in Montana. She regularly gets Bears/Mountain Lions/Wolves in her garden. When her kids were very young, her husband had to shoot and kill a bear that had got through the fence and almost gained entry into the property. Had he not, it's certain that the bear would've been inside the house. I'm very thankful they had a gun in their home.

It's very easy for us brits to be anti-gun in the US, without having the threat they do out there.

I have sympathy with the position of the second guy - in the same way that e.g. farmers in the UK can use guns as a tool.

Perhaps the US should maintain the 2nd amendment right to bear arms, but clarify that it only applies to technologies available at the time of signing, in 1791: No revolvers, no automatics, no cartridge ammunition...

I think you are missing the point in that he was very much for strict gun control. It should be by ’need’ rather than ‘desire’. Living in the sticks with bears and the like is very much a need, living in suburbia and wanting a multitude of weapons of the automatic nature is just stupid. If you really wanted to get him going you just had to mention ‘city folk’ on hunting trips.

Last time I was state side they had the situation of a negligent discharge ( polite way saying someone was being an idiot) in a semi detached house with wooden walls. Whatever the weapon, it was of significant calibre to penetrate the adjoining wall and kill the neighbour…

Not in the immediate future. Maybe in 20 to 25 years.
