Dunk was shocking, simple as that.

Over reaction.

He was left exposed in the 2nd half to counter attacks, but by design as we were going heavy on trying to score a goal.

Yes you see a player 1 v 1 against dunk and running past him, but JP wasn't even in sight in those situations. Harsh to single Dunk out for that performance.

That first half sits on the manager. De Zerbi gave us fluid, one touch attacking football, patterns of play which you could watch with confidence. We don't have any of that at the moment. It's a team of players playing together, vs being coached to be better than the sum of their parts.
It's not just today though. Whilst he was particularly bad today, his general decline goes back to last season.

With what we've got, notwithstanding potential movement next month, the difference between Dunk coming in is that we are way slower at the back, not just from a pace perspective, but we have slowed everything down playing out at the back, knocking sideways passes, giving time for the oppo to set.
At least with Igor he'd try and break the line, either with a run (as JPVH did with him) to overload and getting our wingers involved earlier - last couple of games it's got so slow, there is no outlet ball, so it's either a ball to feet with back to goal that hasn't really worked or the direct ball over the top, which we seem to have done more recently - that maybe a tactic though....

They do, but Veltman has spent the majority of his Albion career at RB, he’s played a handful of games at CB and has never looked particularly comfortable. If we get back to a back 4 of Estupinan, Igor, JP and Veltman we’ll be fine.
Yes that will help but JP has made quite a few errors this season, I feel he was poor defending their first goal. Dunk has lost some pace but he can still be effective when supported well.

Players returning from injury often take time to get back up to speed (see under 'Webster', for example) and Dunk, maybe more so now he's getting on a bit, is no exception. But nevertheless, I don't think bringing him back at the expense of breaking up the JPVH/Igor partnership was a good idea.

Honestly, that's not after-timing either.

Dunk was awful today, why did he let the ball bounce for their 3rd when he could've simply headed it. Our backline just has no confidence anymore

JPVH was far far worse than Dunk today, worst game in the stripes probably
Absolutley-BUT JPVH cannot play as the rightsided CB in a back 3. The pairing of Igor and him in the middle worked very well. Dunk should never have been brought back in when he was.
What message does that send to the team? Nobody has a divine right to be picked ahead of players in form.

Igor is not the answer.

Dunk was really poor today, but JPvH didn’t cover himself in glory either.

Really need to invest in CBs in the summer.

Igor was robbed upfield vs Liverpool leaving Salah through, did the same thing vs Southampton for their equaliser, and of course Leicester…..

However he did play well in covering Dunk and remains good cover, just don’t think he’s regular starter material.

We should never play with 3 CBs
