The Japanese bid for 2022 was always likely to go against them having hosted only 20 years previously.

You're right, they could have bid for 2032, but in the absence of Saudi, Australia was always likely to have been preferred not having hosted before.

WC 2038 looks interesting albeit from 14 years out.

2022 - AFC (Qatar)
2026 - CONCACAF (USA/Mexico/Canada)
2030 - UEFA / CAF/ CONMEBOL (Spain/Portugal/Morocco/Uruguay/Paraguay/Argentina)
2034 - AFC (Saudi Arabia)
2038 - next up would be CONCACAF in order, but my preference would be a first hosting for OFC (Oceania) who've never hosted previously.

It's unlikely New Zealand would host by themselves, but a shared tournament with Australia (despite them moving to the AFC) could address the past.

Of course a few of us might fancy a tournament solely in Oceania despite the clear impracticalities.

England v Brazil in Tahiti anyone? :cool:

Of course China at one point looked like they might host the Fifa WC but Covid seems to have ended any serious ambitions by President Xi and it put paid to them hosting the Asian Cup Finals last year - not that China would have been any more savoury than Saudi Arabia when it comes to human rights abuses.

Yes, I like the idea of England in Tahiti or anywhere in the South Pacific! 😎

It's true that Germany hosted in 1974 and 2006 with a similar 32 year timescale between them, but the tournaments are now shared between all continents rather than just alternating between Europe and South America.

Australia is the country that missed out here in 2022 with ready-made stadia and infrastructure, a sport-loving public and tournament history.

As it turns out, Blatter was clearly holding back a tidal wave of corruption, and was knifed from within the organisation by those who felt they weren’t being allowed to grift enough.

Typical of FIFA but this also shows up how spineless the English FA are. They refused to object to the Qatar WC in the face of clear human rights violations and will not stand up to FIFA now the Saudi's have brought this tournament. That's fine if that's what they align themselves with only it's not is it because every weekend they're coercing footballers to take the knee and wear rainbow armbands. My understanding is that only the Norwegian FA stood up against FIFA's decision, respect to them 👍

Agreed. I too heard that Norway were the only nation to object. Our FA, along with all the others it has to be said, simply rolled over. They've received 'assurances' apparently. Well that's all right then. There will be no slave labour, LGBTQIA+ fans will be welcomed with open arms, rainbow armbands will be accepted, and there will be loads to drink.

It's all bollocks of course, it's all about money and corruption as we all know. Fair enough, but this is the same FA that preaches to us about 'Kick it out', taking the knee, and 'Rainbow Laces'. Double standards doesn't begin to describe it.

It's a farce that the WC has become so expensive to host that only multiple countries or petro-states can now host them. We also have a ludicrous Champions League format, the world club thing which few seem interested in and international breaks every few weeks. I can see why women's and non-league football is on the up.

Ahh but remember...by including Saudi in the football family we can influence them to see the error of their ways...they will soon include rainbow 🌈 laces on their national flag (🤦🏼‍♂️)

Indeed they did and one of the reasons they didn't take up the option is that they knew they wouldn't win it. After all, are FIFA reps going to accept brown envelopes of cash from Oz or brown suitcases of cash from the beheaders ?
