[Brighton] Magpie / Shabitat to close

After decades of providing household and commercial recycling, the Magpie / Habitat co-op on Lewes Road is closing. Years before the Council, they were recycling plastics using a fleet of electric milk floats. Big shame.
And this is their corporate logo. Nuff said.

The wood recycling store in Edward Street looked to be closing down too but thankfully they got a reprieve

A real shame. My then girlfriend and I kitted out our first flat from Shabitat.

They hire and train ex prisoners, homeless etc.

Sad to see that go.

Also on the A26 north of Lewes.

The owner recently told us the business is closing.
How recently were you told?

I was told the same by the Edward Street branch about three weeks ago, but when I rang them a couple of days ago I asked when they were closing and they told me they'd got a reprieve for at least a year. I'm not sure if that also applies to the Lewes branch.

That is sad. We used to use them as a paid service because as you say they took plastic. This was back in the days when recycling in Brighton was in its infancy. Frankly I am surprised they've lasted this long as the council now do for free what I used to pay Magpie for.

But yeah, I remember when my son was little we used to look out for the Magpie recycling truck, rattling down the road looking like something out of a dystopian science fiction film. Always crewed by colourful crusties, half of whom seemed to be permanently stoned.

Sad news :(

Sad to see them go, one of the most satisfying things i’ve seen in recent years was a bunch of extremely angry Council Refuse Collection Personnel getting aggy towards one of the drivers of the ‘milk float’ taking his time along Bonchurch Road one morning and blocking their progress, oh the irony

I was in the Brighton branch last week and was told that they are staying open but the Lewes one is closing (something to do with redeveloping the site). Glad they've had a reprieve.

Hopefully your news supercedes this.

This is incorrect. Magpie recycle plastic that is not acceptable to council free service.

I did not know that, that probably explains why they kept going. It begs the question if they can recycle additional plastics why can't the council?

A real pity, as weve been using Magpie`s Green Box for years as they can recycle stuff that the Council won`t, such as tetrapaks and all plastics apart from thin cling film material. I knew this was going to happen as I spoke to someone at Shabitat a few months ago. She told me that apparently new regulations meant that recycling collectors such as Magpie Green Box had to weigh everything before they sent it off for recycling. They couldnt afford to buy the weighing equipment. Also, Shabitat is unnafected as its a separate co-op from Green Box and will continue trading.

The Council do recycle Tetra Paks just not through household collection. You have to go to one of their special recycling points. The recycling point in Sainsburys Old Shoreham Rd car park take tetra paks

Because the council is locked into a terrible recycling contract that limits what can be recycled. Most places you just chuck all packaging in the recycling and it gets taken. Brighton and Hove we can only recycle plastic bottles, cans, glass, paper and cardboard. No doorstep collection for tetrapac or other plastics. It's crap.

Been using them for years, real shame. Making an effort to really reduce the amount of plastic we use so will have to double down now.

I didn't know Shabitat is staying open - that's good news. The collection bloke told me last week that they're hoping to start a new plastic recycling service if there's enough interest. I'll be emailing them to say I'm in.
Took this this morning just in case it's the end. So much to like in this.

You can recycle all soft plastics including plastic bags (I know other supermarkets do plastic bags too) at the Sainsbury’s West Hove just inside the first doors.
