A real shame. My then girlfriend and I kitted out our first flat from Shabitat.

They hire and train ex prisoners, homeless etc.

Sad to see that go.

I was told the same by the Edward Street branch about three weeks ago, but when I rang them a couple of days ago I asked when they were closing and they told me they'd got a reprieve for at least a year. I'm not sure if that also applies to the Lewes branch.

That is sad. We used to use them as a paid service because as you say they took plastic. This was back in the days when recycling in Brighton was in its infancy. Frankly I am surprised they've lasted this long as the council now do for free what I used to pay Magpie for.

But yeah, I remember when my son was little we used to look out for the Magpie recycling truck, rattling down the road looking like something out of a dystopian science fiction film. Always crewed by colourful crusties, half of whom seemed to be permanently stoned.

A real pity, as weve been using Magpie`s Green Box for years as they can recycle stuff that the Council won`t, such as tetrapaks and all plastics apart from thin cling film material. I knew this was going to happen as I spoke to someone at Shabitat a few months ago. She told me that apparently new regulations meant that recycling collectors such as Magpie Green Box had to weigh everything before they sent it off for recycling. They couldnt afford to buy the weighing equipment. Also, Shabitat is unnafected as its a separate co-op from Green Box and will continue trading.

Because the council is locked into a terrible recycling contract that limits what can be recycled. Most places you just chuck all packaging in the recycling and it gets taken. Brighton and Hove we can only recycle plastic bottles, cans, glass, paper and cardboard. No doorstep collection for tetrapac or other plastics. It's crap.
