Indeed we were, but we had two wins on the bounce to look forward too against Hull 3-0 and a mightily impressive 3-2 against Fulham who were riding high.
We then went on to not lose another home game all season, with some memorable games, fans United 5-0 thumping of Hartlepool, a very fiery encounter with Orient, I think wins over Wigan and Cardiff also flying high.
You could look at it as the turning point, bloody nerve wracking though, countless sleepless nights full of evil thoughts of what I would do too Archer and hoping I would win the lottery to help the Albion, anything something, but we did it in the end.
Puts all the moaning about drawing 2-2 away at Leicester in the Premier League into perspective really.

Even now I still feel a shudder when I see that.
Off those 5 teams four went out of the league at some point and three still are. Hereford and Darlington are National League North.

Yeah, what good has that done them eh...
They have been into administration twice in those 28 years, we have played in four different stadiums, have a state of the art training centre and they have not even got a new stand.

I met up with friends on New Year’s Day 1997 and we were discussing the Albion’s travails. I rather flippantly said that if we get relegated and end up in the Conference League (as it was then) we could at least get promoted back into the FL. My mate replied that we might not be allowed into the Conference League as we wouldn’t have a ground. Ouch! It was then that I realised how really awful our predicament was.

Hereford United were wound up ten years ago. The team in the NLN is a Phoenix club, Hereford FC.

Actually, with the exception of Wimbledon, who had their own ownership and ground trauma still to come, the top division is not wildly different from today. A few clubs in the Championship but no obvious massive upheaval.

It's obvious that we'd be the team that has gained the most league positions in those 28 years (85 places) but who are the next best ? - Fulham with 59 places then Bournemouth with 55 places gained (based upon today's league table)

Interesting that six of Div 4 have been in the top flight since including two cup winners and a final appearance. A UEFA final appearance too.
