Largely avoided all this since I stopped work, but meeting several old colleagues in a West End boozer on Thursday. I will be that amateur
We don't want tedious outsiders like you in our great city. F*****g stay in your provincial hellholes like Burgess H. :)

I was out having a little Christmas drinkies the other day with some CHUMS I see occasionally. It was my round, and two of them wanted a Singha, the other wanted a Spitfire. To help with my ailing memory, I delighted myself by singing (to the tune of Frere Jaques)

Singha Singha Spitfire
Singha Singha Spitfire

whilst pointing at each of them in turn according to their ordert. I so much wanted to round off this ditty by including my own drink, but sadly I was having an Amstel, so it wouldn't really have worked.

It was in the Prince of Wales, if any of you want to avoid me.

....oh ....and a Guinness.
A decent barkeep should just start to pour it, then take the money before starting to serve the next in line while the initial pour settles. It will sharpen up the ordering next time if they have to wait a bit for the Guinness...

Experienced and confident bartenders deal with it thus… “I’ll come back to you when you’ve decided what you want…”
Indeed.

Many of the issues related to amateur drinkers can be overcome by decent staff.

It's worth noting that the profits made during amateur hour in December are keeping the pubs & bars open for the seasoned drinkers (/old soaks) to enjoy year-round.

I know this is a thread about December but I love pubs in January.

Being teetotal for medication and work reasons I go to Wetherspoons around Sussex and order a big fry-up washed down by a couple of pints of Pepsi. There's no loud drunken bellends - but if there are, I know they won't be around past 50 years-old......

Absolutely a group came in my local yesterday and were asking what herbal teas they do. They seemed shocked when they said they didn't.
I sincerely hope it was a very frank and robust “we don’t “

This is why I love micro pubs. No cocktails and one stout that doesn’t take an hour to settle. Likely still full of loyal locals who like the beer and professional bar people who know who’s next. Very likely to be avoided by Mandy in HR when she realises they’re not playing Last Christmas on a loop. Lovely.

Going to The Albert for a gig on Tuesday. It’s my brother’s band ( who are really good) and I normally love that pub but I do have the fear that there will be at least one office party in, given the location. Hopefully not.
One of the local breweries (Lost Pier Brewing) has set up a micropub on an industrial estate just down the road from us. I love it. Half a dozen of their own beers, wine is either house red or white and cider is in cans in a fridge. Food varies as they have a pop-up food truck parked outside Thurs-Sun evenings. It’s getting much busier than the two local pubs now though.

At what point does amateur drinking become professional. What is the defining scenario that bridges the gap between the two?
..............and then where's the next bridge into 'ex pro' beardy 'craft beer' wankerdom where some sad old **** takes 15 minutes discussing the various tastes with the bar staff, requests and tries a mouthful from each pump of before deciding 'ah, I'll have a John Smiths, can't go wrong with that' ?

I know the guy who runs the mobile pizza van and will pop in next time I’m around, heard good things about the set up down there

This coming Thursday is the busiest works party night of the year.

Avoid.

I will be working. I will be busy.

That's when mine is. I, however, will be watching Only Fools and Horses at the Dome with friends and then eating somewhere like Wagamummas that will get us in and out quickly without a likely office party occurring.

My favourite with crisps is the old ‘what crisps have you got?’ Question.

Sit back and observe as the bar person runs through ‘ready salted, salt and vinegar etc, into mini cheddars, onto various peanuts’.

And what is the selection?

‘Ready salted please’
