Albion U-18s begin their FA Youth Cup campaign on Monday evening as they travel to Newcastle United in a tough 3rd round fixture. The FA Youth Cup is the most prestigious U-18 competition. One of the main purposes when the competition was first introduced was to give youngsters the experience of playing at the main ground of clubs; unfortunately in this modern world Premier League clubs seem loath to make their stadia available, so this tie will take place at Whitley Park rather than St James' Park.

It will be very interesting to see if Freddie Simmonds and Harry Howell are brought into the squad for this match (they are young enough that they are eligible not just in 2024-25 but next season as well). Their absence from the U-21s on Saturday suggests they may well be involved (clubs typically field their strongest line-ups in this competition).

The U-18s had a decent start to the season, unbeaten in their first 7 league matches, but a 6-5 home defeat to Derby County in the U-18 PL Cup was a shocker. However, their form has tailed off and they haven't won any of their last 5 league matches - they've actually lost the last 3 without scoring a goal, most recently to Palace last weekend.

Albion were drawn against these same opponents at the same stage of the competition in the 2017-18 season and it was a disaster as a side featuring Aaron Connolly was thrashed 5-0 at the Amex Stadium. Albion have twice reached the 6th round (quarter-finals) and the first time was in 2005-06 when they lost in a penalty shoot-out to Newcastle at St James' Park. At least that run produced a few future first teamers - and not just from the Albion U-18s; that Newcastle side included Tim Krul and Kazenga LuaLua (it also featured Andy Carroll and Fraser Forster was on the bench).

The leading scorers for the U-18s so far this season are Joe Belmont and Nehemiah Oriola with seven each; midfielder Shane Nti has scored six.

I have no idea if Newcastle will stream the match - the FA Youth Cup is not a Premier League competition so there is nothing to stop it being streamed (just a case of whether the Magpies can be bothered).

Strong line-up. Freddie Simmonds partners Jacob Vickers in the centre of defence. U-16 (and Italian U-17 international) Cristiano Ahan at left-back. Callum Mackley and Shane Nti fortifying the midfield with Harry Howell also starting. Leading scorers Joe Belmont and Nehemiah Oriola both in the side.

Henry Kasvosve, signed from Bristol City recently, is on the bench for his first involvement with the side:-

So we did get him in the end then. Great - I thought Brizzle City were resisting our advances for him.
