Signed.

Why is Hove so important? No better than Whitehawk, Portslade or Patcham. About time we ended their elevated status.
Why?

True, my autism means I often dont get nuanced jokes made at my expense without emojis to support them to show that they are not serious which can make life very challenging.

Someone apparently took my suggestion of changing the name of Brighton & Hove to The City of ‘Seagulls’ seriously but instead of accepting the woosh as a friendly clarification that I wasn’t being serious, chose instead to snipe back in an unnecessarily unfriendly post.

The (NOT serious!) idea that The City of B&H should be shortened to the City of ‘Seagulls’ is probably too obscure for people who haven’t lived in Brighton as long as I have..it wasn’t even meant to be funny - just a nod to the thousands of seagulls in the town.

I find the OPs post both bizarre and hilarious at the same time - in fact exactly the sort of post I would probably make on a Brighton football forum on April Fool’s Day if I wanted to woosh a whole thread - but then maybe that’s also my love of irony 😂

There’s been some proper nonsense posted on this site, some of it by me, but this must take the biscuit.
The 'Let's make cardboard cutout facemasks of Anthony Knockaert's recently deceased father in a show of solidarity' is another contender.

And an honourable mention for one my favourites, the short-lived enthusiasm around the 'Brighton Magikoooo' song from a decade ago.

Oh god yeah

At times this site is beautifully surreal :lolol:

What I liked about this, it obviously comes from a good place….but is incredibly misjudged.

This isn't about erasing Hoves identity, far from it. Hove is part of the city and still will be. Its about merging even closer. its simplifing the title of the city. We all refer to it as Brighton anyway. No one says "im from Brighton and Hove". Hove will still be a big important part of our city as it is now; the club would not be affected

We can't merge Hove any closer. It's next door. I'm not sure that those who live there would like to be known as Brighton, as if Hove was now like Queen's Park or Patcham.

Hove has a major historical identity in its own right- hence the 'Hove actually'. It would now be more 'Brighton actually'

Brighton and Hove isn't a city to me anyway, Brighton will always be a town. So will Hove.

But to merge the name would be like merging Paignton and Torquay or Bournemouth and Christchurch into single town titles. They are unitary authorities but places of distinct identity.

I always try to ponder and reason with left field ideas, being an eccentric myself. But this suggestion I just can't fathom.

Has anyone seen the new Xmas movie tonight? It’s called Hove alone
Has anyone seen the NSC response to the name change idea ? It's called 'Leave Hove alone'

This isn’t about the club changing name they would not need to as Hove will still be there. It’s about a city evolving becoming bigger and better, Hove, Patcham, Portslade, etc in Brighton.
But the city, as you call it, is already unified as one political and administrative entity. If a husband and wife had a double barrelled surname, and the husband said 'I want you to do away with yours and just use mine because it gives us more of a chance to evolve and become better' I dare say he might not be in for a comfortable night in the spare room.

Just being serious for a moment.

It will never happen formally - Titles mean something - the City will not revert back to what it was prior to 1997, relinquish its City status (which I was ambivalent about tbh) and again become 2 borough Councils again under East Sussex District. This was part of a national restructuring of local government - it wasn’t a local whim.

Making Brighton and Hove a Unitary Authority was a major milestone that merged the Borough of Brighton and the Borough of Hove into one District Council in 1997 - the seat of the Council is now based at Hove Town Hall. Many of us petitioned against the unification but the original alternative was to merge Hove with Worthing and Adur which really would have lost the distinctive character of Hove.

Yes, people refer to Brighton & Hove as ‘Brighton’ - despite having lived in Hove for many years, I grew up in Brighton (not Hove) so always refer to my home as ‘Brighton’ - but that’s like us referring to the Brighton & Hove FC home ground as the “Amex” - no one calls it the “American Express Community Stadium” or even the “American Express Stadium” we all call it the “Amex”.

I'm not saying it should do, we do not want to revert back, we want to become better and bigger together, its about bringing Hove in offically under the city of Brighton, Hove will be a major district in the city of Brighton

Now available in Hove
We all refer to it as Brighton anyway. No one says "im from Brighton and Hove". Hove will still be a big important part of our city as it is now; the club would not be affected
I don't. I live in Hove, and I say to people "I live in Hove". I used to live in Brighton and then I said to people "I live in Brighton". I hope that's clear enough for you.

Yeah its clear. so what im saying is no one says Brighton and Hove. This change would unite the whole city. One city one name! With Hove being a major district in the city of Brighton

Why is Brighton so important? No better than Hove
Well if we look geographically, Hove is actually in Brighton. Portslade and Mile oak to the west come under Brighton and central Brighton to the east, but its also about pride, and passion we want to be known as one of the best cities in England! This is how it will happen. Its not about being more important, Hove is an important part of our city but the city is referred to as Brighton isnt it.

Hello everyone. Gutted about the result today, but we’ll bounce back stronger as always.

I want to share something that I’ve been thinking about for a long time, and it’s now live as a petition.
Recently, I shared the idea with the City Council, and they suggested starting a petition to gauge public interest.

Here’s the petition link if you’d like to sign

My idea is to simplify the city’s name from Brighton & Hove to just Brighton. Importantly, this wouldn’t erase Hove’s identity—it would still be recognized as a distinct and proud part of Brighton, much like areas like Chelsea are in London. This change is about creating a unified and stronger identity for the city as a whole.

The petition needs 1,250 signatures to move forward, so every voice counts.

As a lifelong Brighton fan, season ticket holder, and someone who deeply cares about our city, I’ve also emailed Paul Barber to make sure the club would be okay with this idea. If the club were against it, I wouldn’t go any further with it.

Right now, I’m just trying to gauge interest and see what the wider community thinks. Personally, I believe the City of Brighton sounds more streamlined and powerful while still preserving Hove’s unique identity as part of something bigger.

Once again, here’s the link to the petition if you’d like to share your views.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, whether you agree or not.
You joined the forum on 03 December 2024.
The e-petition runs from 03 December 2024.

Conclusion: you joined our forum only to promote your e-petition. No other reason.

Your e-petition, which contains spelling and grammatical mistakes, doesn't actually say - why - you want to do this.
Neither does it give any detail on the advantages and certainly not the disadvantages, of merging Brighton and Hove. You just make it sound great, but without any meat or justification. There is no cost-benefit analysis whatsoever. None.

'while ensuring that Hove remains a distinct and vibrant district within the larger city.' How would you achieve this? There is no detail provided.
'Adopting this single name could boost the city’s appeal on a global scale, benefiting tourism and attracting investment.' How? Plan? Numbers? Projections?
'Locally, it could foster a deeper sense of unity, giving the city a bigger, more cohesive feel as it thrives under one name'. Examples? Ideas? You give none.

How much would it cost? What benefits would emerge? Timelines? Again, you provide no detail.

Are you a councillor? If so, you need to identify yourself, or at least give your background and experience, so that people can assess the idea objectively, in full transparency, openness and honesty.

In its current form, the e-petition is an absolute non-runner.

I now though, that for sure, you are on a wind up. Either that, or an ex from Poets Corner REALLY f***ed you over.

Whatever, well done. Top wooshing.
