Playing snooker
...far more important than any medals or cups was when one of my lads who we signed when he’d previously been knocking around with a bad crowd and his parents effectively begged us to take him on, told me when he was working on my new patio at home “Harty if it wasn’t for you I’d have gone to prison”
Harty: "Because sport taught you purpose and discipline and respect? And gave you the opportunity to lead a better life?"

Young lad: "No, because every time the police drove past, I hid in your shed."

Bear with me on this one because it was a long time ago.
My estimate is around 1970, I was still at scholl and would have been 14. I was an excelant map reader given a compass and map, remember these are the days before Google and mobile phones.
It was some sort of overnight hike, no idea from where to where other than we passed through Westmeston. It was just myself and and another lad. I do remember that we were thirsty and it occured to me that houses have outside taps and we quenched our thirst that way. There was a lot of countyside walking.
To the chase and reason to write this. We may have been a youth club or scouts but we were up against crack teams of army cadets and other professional teams, albeit youngsters of our age.
And we won. Names in the paper, little trophy and everything.

1. A hole in one at Roedean - 7 iron off the tee, uphill, green not visible. I searched for my ball, assuming it had gone over the back somewhere. Couldn't find it, so took the (frankly AUDACIOUS) move of looking in the hole, and there it was. I still have that ball somewhere, with the date etched onto it with a sharpie.

2. Doing the old Benfield 9 hole course in 38. The one and only time I ever broke 40 going round that little beast.

That Benfield course was tough. It was a bugger to get it through that little windmill on the 4th, got me every time….

Reminds me of an accountancy training course I was on. Sat opposite a Scottish guy at lunch with a rugby jersey on - oh, I asked, do you play rugby? Yeah I do, was his reply. Oh, who do you play for? Scotland and the British Lions! It was this guy, John Beattie! I got to know him quite well as we toiled through a few such courses over the years, but a real foot in mouth introduction!

Love that.I may have been able to save you from that one had I been present depending on how much he had changed. Number 8 for Scotland and the lions

He used to bring his guitar along and play rugby songs in the bar all night, and organise touch rugby games in the evenings. The best one was watching Question of Sport in the lounge with him when by chance he was actually the subject of the ‘what happened next’ question! Nice guy, helped make accountancy training slightly less intolerable!

Doing the London Marathon in 2013 - my one and probably only marathon I'll ever do. Due to osteoarthritis in my knees, I walked it which took 8 hours 2 mins, and whilst its not fast I'm massively proud of the fact I did it (with lots of training including taking the train to Goring and walking back to Brighton along the coast) and finished!

I forgot about 2 Hockey ones.

I was captain of a 3rd team and we had a cup game against the holders and a team 2 divisions above us. We decided to do something different in our management team meeting in the Little Chef and played 4-4-2. At hockey, no one played 4-4-2. At least they didn't 30 years ago although curiously they seemed to be playing it in a youth game I watched recently. I digress.

The highlights were the opposition captain screaming at the centre forward for not marking when we had a free hit "I can't mark anyone", he shouted, "even they don't know where they are supposed to be playing" Shortly after, we scored and we held on for a 1-0 win. I wasted so much time as a Goalkeeper their centre forward punched me but I was wearing a helmet.

A few weeks later, the 1st team keeper was at a funeral and the 2nd team keeper got injured. All of a sudden, I was in the first team in the last 16 of the National cup. The first team keeper, by the way played for England. No pressure.

Ironically, My uni was playing against Brighton on the hockey pitch which used to be in Lewes which is less than 5 minutes walk from my mum and dad's house. After 10 minutes we were 2-0 down and all I'd done is throw the ball out of the net. Things improved and by the end we were 3- 2 up. We gave away a short corner and I lucked out a save that was going for top bins gambling where it would go.

Man of the match
Got shit faced in the Gloucester
Never played for the 1sts again
Proper team got smashed in the last 8.

Happy days.

Did he remember the answer?

Was always shite at sport, but one year I ended up in a high jump jump-off on a sports day against the resident sporty kid.

I lost, but even getting that far was astonishing. Still can’t believe I did it now TBH.

I remember at University drawing the reigning champion in the first round of the snooker tournament. He had a couple of his own cues to choose from, I just took mine from the rack. Best of 3 frames. Never have I played so well, he couldn’t believe it. I was sinking pots the length of the table in a way I’d never really done before. The champion was absolutely rattled. I had a decent lead and then lost the first frame on the black, I was so close. Gutted. For the second frame normal service was resumed and he cleared the table with a phenomenal break, 80 or so, and I never got a look in. But that first frame…

I also won the Sussex Scouts Chess championships 2 years out of 3.

When my eldest got into Chess, I dropped the "scouts"bit when I was playing and bragging to him.

1979 I won the Sussex Christian Endeavour reading trophy. Not sure if that's a sport.

In 1994, in a match at Trowbridge, I bowled and had caught behind two Minor Counties first XI batsmen.

Still not much to write home about.

Probably not, but it’s certainly a revelation.

National Scout Car Champion 1976. We had to build our own peddle cars to strict rules...great fun. Races were held at different sea side towns annually. I did race at Brighton one year. IIRC when I won we were in Scarborough. The races always took place along the prom...

FRUIT OF THE BLOOM
I played football for Wisdom Sports 20 years and it went pretty well winning many trophies, player of seasons etc over the years.

Also played Pool to a pretty high standard.

Yet NOTHING compares to 2 moments that lasted literally 10 seconds total and both involving the same Man... Mr GERRY RYAN

While playing for Wisdom Sports on a Saturday afternoon, Gerry occasionally came and watched as we played close to the Witch Pub.

Anyway on this occasion after a brief moment of Magic, Gerry shouted ' Great Feet Marshy' from the sideline... my heart burst with pride obvs.

The 2nd was when Gerry was Assistant Manager at the Albion with Liam Brady at the Goldstone, I was a pretty young lad.

In the pre match warm up, Gerry saw me standing in the north stand and shouted my Name and a waved :)
