Well. I was one of those excited about his ability and his potential. And I still am.

The loan move appears not to be working out. Fine, this happens a lot. Get the lad back in Jan and we can re-think the best next step for his development.
Yes, lots of decisions to be made for loanees coming up soon. Recalls for Barco and Rushworth, for certain - wonder who else? Last season more than half our loanees to domestic leagues were pulled half way through the season - though TBF, Beadle was recalled to move to a higher level, and Offiah because of his mystery illness. Wonder if our loan placement will prove to have been better this year?

I have a feeling that he is a left wing back, or left midfielder. Sadly, I’m not sure Hürzeler wants those sort of positions covered in his team.

Barco may have to learn to be a proper left back if he was a future here in whilst Fab is at the wheel.
I think he be really good as a defensive midfielder in the Ayari role. Him picking out passes with that left foot would be an absolute joy.

Bit over the top of Barco to fly all the way back to England just to invade the pitch and flip off our away support over how his loan is going.

Update - done deal apparently

“Estadio Deportivo has reported that Valentín Barco, a promising Argentine left-back, has approved a move to FC Porto. Currently, Barco is not included in the plans for Sevilla, where he is on loan from Brighton, having played only nine matches this season. It is reported that FC Porto is interested in acquiring Barco on a loan deal with an option to buy. The player reportedly views a move to FC Porto in a positive light. The 20-year-old, who initially gained recognition at Boca Juniors before transferring to Brighton, is expected to be sent back by Sevilla in January due to his limited appearances. With FC Porto aiming to bolster their left-back position, currently occupied by Galeno under Vítor Bruno's management, Barco reportedly sees this as a favorable opportunity to rejuvenate his career.”

This is a big move for Barco and will be an excellent chance for him to develop but a bit pissed off we agreed to include an option to buy - we didn’t for Seville - sounds like his loan fail has convinced us to let him go if we get an offer? ☹️

Depends. If the agreement to buy is £25 or £30M, not a bad deal. Option to buy - frankly, not so upbeat about them.

Very surprised that we seem to want to move him on. The only conclusion that I can draw from giving them a loan to buy option

I don’t get it either - we’ve barely seen time for him to develop and LB is one position that we should definitely be looking to deepen in the squad by the end of this season..

A loan with an option to buy, might make sense if any future transfer agreement included a buy back clause for us but otherwise, it looks like our scouts watching him have decided for whatever reason, he isn’t going to get up to mid EPL level or at least, not be able to do so at Brighton.

I’d also be interested to know what the option to buy fee is that is agreed, if indeed this has been.

I don't think FC Porto would have any desire to loan him if they couldn't get the option included.
I would imagine it would be £15-20m and a fat sell-on percentage if it happens.

Odd signing - down to the player ? Personality? Failed the dickhead test everyone loves to talk about.

A small shining light from an attacking perspective in a terrible few months at the end of last season but he looked absolutely miles off it as a left back defensively

And my conclusion is as follows.

This story seems to be coming from Portugal. It could be leaked from Porto direct. I would assume that they absolutely want a buyout clause, why wouldn’t they? However, I’m almost certain they won’t get one. Why would we give them one for a player so young with such potential?

This reminds me of the stories around Facu and Osman where local media leaked loan stories and tried to drum up an options to buy. It didn’t work!

That’s not the point. We probably wouldn’t either if it were the other way round. However, we are the registered club, it is up to us to decide who to loan him to and on what terms - we can take it or leave it. We have chosen to take it apparently if this option to buy isn’t just a rumour.

£15-20m is low these days for a EPL player under contract until 2028, even for a LB and is barely clawing a profit from the €10m+ we invested after wages/training etc. Agreeing to sell Barco ( for £15-20m?!) 12 months after we bought him, before he’s even played a season for us, suggests he was not one of the most talented teenagers in Argentina most of us thought we were getting when we signed him.

Or the story is bollix.
