I'm in South Korea right now, and in fact spent the day at the Demilitarised Zone between N and S Korea. There's been a lot of police on the streets here in Seoul but mostly connected with anti-government demos going on rather than heightened tension with North Korea. There was a massive march against the government here on Saturday which was loud and large but I saw no violence. Word on the street here is that martial law is all about the president trying to save his skin rather than any new issue with the North. Everything seems to be proceeding as normal. People bemused rather than panicking.
I look forward to your “anyone know a bar in Yongin showing the game?” post tomorrow.

You’ll be absolutely fine. S Korea is a modern democracy. Seoul is a huge city that functions much better than London. Millions of people live and work here and get on with their lives while a few hotheads shout in the street. Huge numbers of tourists too.

Enjoy your holiday. Don’t spend too long in Seoul if you can help it. Great city but I don’t think you need spend more than 3 or 4 days here unless you have a particular reason for doing so. Next time we’ll go to Busan and other smaller places.
Thank you. We’ve got a week in Seoul, including Christmas Day, then we’re heading out to Busan for a few days with some day trips too. Mini-Exile loves South Korean culture inspired originally by a love of K-Pop she’s no longer got, so she’s behind why we’re going really, and she’s got a big list of places (and shops) she wants us to try and get to!

There’s a great show called The Painters on in Seoul at the moment. Mixes K-Pop and art and dance and humour. Performed by a bunch of very talented young guys. Only lasts about 70 minutes or so and I suspect your daughter will love it. Fun for adults too. Not expensive. £20 or so. Seoul is an amazing place for shopping and eating. YouTube has hundreds of helpful videos.

I don't know what all the fuss is about - I've been under marital law for the last 20 years. Whatever she says, I have to do, or else...

South Korea is CLASS and you'll absolutely love it I'm sure. Friendly people, incredible food and super safe, clean organised etc. You'll have a great trip regardless of what's happening now.

Good choice, I've heard its beautiful in December and the night life nothing to laugh at.
