Terry Griffiths: Former world snooker champion dies aged 77

Former world snooker champion Terry Griffiths has died aged 77, the World Snooker Tour has confirmed.

Don't normally do RIP threads, but he was one of the reasons I fell in love with the game. Came from nowhere to win the big one in 1979. Great character. Sadly lost to the evil dementia.

RIP. 1979 was the first snooker I saw on the box, was that the first Crucible year? So talented and he came across as a gentleman too.

(I missed out on the black n white tv snooker era).

I think the Crucible began in 77 or 78. Like you, the 79 one is the first one I remember.

A sad loss indeed. One of the greats who made snooker popular to a huge TV audience watching in colour.

Immortalized in Chas & Dave's Snooker Loopy in which a number of the Matchroom players sang and appeared in the video.

Now Terry the taff was born in a gaff
In the valleys of the land of song
And as the reds he puts to bed
He likes to sing along
"If I win", he says with a grin
"It can only help me, can't it?"
"I'll celebrate, I'll buy another eight"
"Hairbrushes for me barnet"

There’s a picture of him in my local snooker/social club with members from when he visited (1980 something I think). Lovely fella by all accounts. RIP.

I saw some of his games in the early 80's and demanded a 6 foot table for my birthday. I'm still not the quickest player in the world. But I still love the game and play regularly

Met him when I was a kid when the snooker stars would go around the Pontins holiday camps. Seem to remember her was a very friendly bloke.
