I also thought he did ok - but many of here last night were posting that he was terrible and should be nowhere near the side in future !
The thing Joel has that our other wide defensive players don't have is first class positioning. It's particularly obvious in transition and recovery.
Estupinan is the counter example. Much stronger going forward, good defender with play in front of him - but in transition he is often too far away to impact the game. I feel Lamptey is better in this phase, but still nowhere close to Joel. Yesterday Southampton broke down the right and left in both first and second half, and our defence was too far away to impact the play. With better crossing they could have had 2 or 3 goals.

plus his initial tackle led to their goal
Lamptey's pace was weird yesterday. Going forward he looked like a pint-sized Usain Bolt, but as soon as he had to track back he looked more like Neil Ruddock.

Seriously? If I was an opposition manager and clocked the Brighton team sheet, the first thing I’d do is to tell my lot to focus on whatever side of the pitch he was playing on. Defending is the weakest part of his gameOK if you insist.
