Yes - fair enough. But why wouldn't you just say 'Oh look, I've found the phone that I thought had been stolen'? That would have been the end of the matter surely....unless there was something else going on.
As an aside, if what she says about her solicitor’s advice is true, then that sounds rather odd advice to this layman, (but I have now read JC Denton’s informed comments).
In my limited, second hand experience of dealing with legal proceedings, it would be wrong to thing that the advice given by soliciters/lawyers is always correct, and it would often be wrong to read too much into somebody behaving in a way that doesn't seem entirely sensible and logical from a detached viewpoint.

Gods country fortnightly
She had to resign.

Well done to her.

She would have been the front page story across most media for weeks if she hadn’t.

The government can’t afford to have this sort of distraction.

As for her crime, I don’t give a toss.

Reported to have responded with "no comment" in her Police interview so obviously had nothing to hide
I've not broken any laws, but I've watched enough '24 Hours in Police Custody' to know that 'No Comment' is always the sensible approach.

I'm also a big fan of this bit from 'Homicide Life on the Streets'. Fantastic acting performances, especially from Andre Braugher, running through statements from real homicde police sd featured in David Simon's book that was the source material for this and the first series of 'The Wire':

You might need to take these off if you think that this is the end of it. So much doesn't add up.

One of the few good people in this government. This is ridiculous, Starmer should not accept the resignation
Yes, very good at dealing with the rail unions. Don't bother negotiating, just give the greedy bastards what they are asking for. Job done. An embarrassment just like the majority of the cabinet.

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
A Conservative Party spokesman said: “Louise Haigh has done the right thing in resigning. It is clear she has failed to behave to the standards expected of an MP'

Where do I start... ? :ROFLMAO:

My learning from this is that having a criminal record does not necessarily preclude you from becoming an MP, you'd think that a basic requirement for representing thousands of constituents in parliament is that you're not a crook!

I don't agree with that. Each situation is different. Folk aren't defined by the law, they are defined by character. In this case, it really is nothing.

I'm talking in general, not just this case. You can't become a Teacher, Doctor, Transport worker but hey, MP is fine. I'd rather have someone with character and no criminal record than just the character bit, I'm just surprised it's just not excluded in the first place and cut out any grey areas.

I don't believe it should be the case though. As an example, 30 years odd a go a friend of mine was convicted of fraud and spent six months inside. It was a stupid thing to do, I really don't know what he was thinking. But we all do stupid things.

When I see him these days, I don't see a criminal. I see a really nice bloke and family man who I have a lot of respect for. I would certainly employ him in a responsible position. I see a lot of 'law abiding' citizens who I don't feel that connection with.

To me criminal records are evidence of a transgression of law and the law is merely a tool to stop a chaotic society. This is, of course, not to say that certain transgressions that some folk have done should not bar them from certain vocations.

I see no reason for Louise Haigh to resign other than the media, full of many convicted criminals, would order such a thing.

There is a lot more to this story that will hopefully come out. How long after the mugging was reported to the Police was the work phone found and how long after it was found did the Police contact her?

I'd also like to know who leaked the story to Sky as I doubt very much that they found it themselves and that would raise questions as to motive for leaking? We'll never get that info because as Sky pontificate about integrity on the part of Louise Haigh, it goes out of the window when it comes to their own practices.

Bbc report that the Conservatives had the bones of this during the election campaign but couldn't find the magistrates court it was held at to get the finer details so no journalists would touch it

I might have this wrong (and, if anyone can provide evidence to the contrary, please do) but I don't think Haigh actually has a criminal record but has been found guilty of a criminal conviction. I was half-listening to WatO and I think this distinction was raised.

I’m struggling to give a shit.

Why would she resign over that?

Weird.
It reminds me of that bit in Yes Prime Minister when Hacker's worried that one of his ministers has resigned, and Humphrey's like "No! This is brilliant, you bounced them into resigning over a point of principle that nobody understands or cares about instead of over something people are interested in."

I'm paraphrasing, obviously.

Nothing wrong with the vetting - they knew about it. The decision making was the stupid bit.

She didn't resign because of the fraud offence, she resigned because it became public.
How do you know?
