Nobody accepts disgusting abuse of animals.

So having strong animal advocates has been a valuable part of the lobbying to criminalize animal abuse, and indeed advance laws such as the fox hunting ban.

But this sort of tomfoolery is simply embarrassing:

Earlier this week I phoned the RSPCA because I found a suitcase with a fox in it.

The lady on the phone asked me if it was moving.

I said that I wasn't sure, but that would probably explain the suitcase.

 PETA are to animal rights groups what one bloke with a kazoo is to the Royal Philharmonic.

Nobody takes PETA seriously, regardless of one’s views on animal welfare. They’re the most extreme, looney tunes end of the scale and are shunned even by moderate protest groups.

PETA euthanasia rates are 70-90% for healthy animals within their care. They do more harm to animals than civilians on a daily basis, including those who eat meat or wear leather. Insane.

Quite right too. I mean, what cruel bastard paints a lion red?

On a slightly more serious note, like a really irritating advert we're all talking about PETA. So, job done?

Is there a reputable source for this? I've seen official data quoting euthanasia rates around 70%, but the majority are supposedly very sick, aggressive, or otherwise unable to be rehomed.

Should my local pub, The Cunning Stunt, also change its name?

Here’s just one article, of many. This one is particularly insightful though as written by a lawyer specialising in the subject with some official (US) figures from just last year.

In PETA’s eyes any ownership of animals is inherently wrong and the animal is suffering indentured servitude, particularly those co-habiting with humans. They believe that they are “freeing” these animals from their shackles.

Thanks for this.

I seem to remember a similar controversy with the RSPCA shelters and high euthanasia rates. Our relationship with animals, particularly species that have been 'domesticated', and deemed to be suffering, is complicated.
