there's the idea that we never beat relegation threatened teams - and this is true . we sometimes struggle . But even last season - when we didn't win that often we still beat the team that finished 16th, 17th (twice) , 18th, and 20th. We also lost to Luton 4-0 etc but hey .

Our 6 wins this season are against teams that are now
2nd, 6th, 10th, 12th, 13th, and 15th.

We lost to teams that are
1st and 3rd

We've drawn v teams that are
4th, 7th, 17th and 18th.

We'll start brilliantly - all over them for 10 minutes, almost score twice.....pace will dip a bit in the next 10 mins or so, but still on top.... then midway through the half they'll venture forward for a first real attack - probably on the counter - and score.
We'll huff and puff, almost score three times before and after half time.... then just after a particularly intense bout of Albion pressure, with a shot over the bar in front of an open goal, and another point blank miracle save from their keeper, one of our lads will get caught possession just inside their half, quick counter attack, and ... bang... its 0-2.
We get a late goal back - probably Ferguson, poking one in shortly after coming on as sub. Can we get the equaliser ? No.

- Player unrest over lack of game time
- injuries to key players (eg Welbeck and JPVH)
- other sides hit form (United, Villa, Spurs etc)

Deja vu and extremely likely that their keeper will be MOTM. Meltdown on here with plenty of references to Potterball post match

I've missed two home games this year, Man City and Spurs. I'm coming to this one, so there's the first problem.

I'm going to go with an early unjust Saints penalty, which will be missed but allowed to be retaken and they will go 1-0 up from it. We will then batter them the whole game and get the two goals we need, before making another Wieffer 4 on 1 style mistake near the end when trying to put the game to bed, and they'll go straight up the other end and make it 2-2. We'll all leave the Amex having gone 2nd in the Premier League feeling like we've just lost.

I am coming down from Scotland for it, despite tv coverage telling me not to, so I apologise in advance for any lurgi that puts on it. But being an optimist I am already envisioning seeing the Albion goals from my seat and the 2nd place celebrations at the end. Plus I'm staying in Brighton so don't have to rush off and can just chill out in the train queue. Total Luxury. So I'm going to count those chickens well before hatching. PS If out for a few warm-up beers Friday lunchtime where is good for Albionatmos? Caxton? Anywhere else?

To be slightly pedantic (and off topic, this is NSC after all), the opposite of an underdog is not an overdog, but a top dog.

This come from the days when you would cut planks by rolling a tree trunk over a large pit and use a two man saw to cut along its length. The poor beggar in the pit getting covered in shavings and detritus was the underdog and the guy standing astride the trunk in the sunshine was known as the top dog.
I used to think that. However - there is no actual written evidence of the saw pit derivation. The teeth on the chain holding the logs in place is called a dog - like the teeth at the end of the chainsaw and on a sewing machine - basically the gripper bit that holds the item steady. But when sawpits like this were in common use, no-one ever wrote about the sawyers being top/under dog. They seemed to have been referred to as top sawyer and pitman.

It may actually be that we have later reverse-invented a derivation because it sounded likely.

The first found printed references to underdogs in the mid 1800s referred to dog-fighting. And dog-fights often took place in pits - sometimes the very same sawpits as above.

Top-dog being the one that one, and came out 'on top'.
I respect this knowledge. "Overdog" didn't sound right to me anyhow.
Overdog is used in some older articles about dog-fighting, along with upper-dog,

We won’t, we’ve turned a corner. The old Albion lose last Saturday at Muff. The biggest positive so far from FB is he seems to learn so quickly. Chelsea away, he’s not repeated those tactics. Muff away, we weren’t going all out for the 3rd. We’re changing.

If youre struggling with your own albion flavoured ennui over how agonisingly close we are to being second, take a dip into how our retarded hampshire cousins are feeling about friday night...

Hooper will give a penalty against us that is a yard outside the box.

Ings and Ward-Prowse will get their usual goals against us.

It will be like the “Why did you let it bounce?” game against Palace, if we’d have won that, we would have gone top.

We drew.

And the trains are shit.

Actually that’s just a given.
From the club website:

Post match: We have been advised engineering works are taking place along the West Coastway on the evening of 29 November from approximately 11.30pm, closing all lines.

So, with an 8pm kick off and not only Albion fans but Saints fans heading back West this is going to go well.

If those two score against us on Friday, then we know that strange dark forces are working against us. :)

'Classic smash and grab' is the phrase that comes to mind. We'll have countless opportunities to score, their keeper will have the game of his life, Gillett will rule two out with controversial VAR decisions. They'll score a spawny goal on the counter - two deflections and goes in off Bart's arse. 0-1.

Several of the team log on to NSC on Friday afternoon and see reports of people setting off for St Mary's Stadium. In a panic they leap into their cars and head for Southampton only to realise their mistake too late. We field a team of the only 9 eligible players available at the Amex and hold out heroically until the 101st minute when our two CBs collapse simultaneously with cramp leaving space for the Saints to nick the winner.
