Indeed. Angela Rayner is probably closest in the modern Labour party but doesn't quite have his charisma. A decent, hard-working politician who gave many years of service ... and gave us Falmer too.

We were on the big March for Falmer down near the Brighton Centre where the Labour Party were having their conference and there was an armed police guy standing in a side door watching us - I got chatting to him and asked him what he was up to exactly, and he said he was John Prescott’s bodyguard, I asked him what he was really like, and he said he loved him and said he was the most hard-working man he’d ever known, he said he never stopped, that always stayed with me as the media at the time certainly didn’t portray him as such,
what he then did for us thereafter showed how determined he was when he had a good cause to fight for, yes there were many others who also put in heaps towards getting the stadium but his support was pivotal - don’t make them like John anymore sadly and we should all be eternally grateful for his efforts.

A great man, with deep integrity, humour and intelligence. Oh and the Falmer thing. I once met someone who worked for him back then, they were all bemused and impressed in equal measure by our campaigning.
I used to love his fiery speeches towards the end of the Labour Party conference when frankly it often looked like he’d had a couple of brown ales too many the night before. Absolutely scathing about the Tories “Doctor? Brian? MACKwhinney?!” Etc.
He’ll be greatly missed.

Nick Robinson mentions this morning that when Tony Blair defended his punching the egger with the words 'john will be john', he challenged him that it sounded like a mum defending her son on the steps of a court building.
However the public did react as Blair had felt they would. It was already factored into their view of him (much like george w bush being not the smartest or Clinton being a serial adulterer).
In essence he was popular without being populist
