Putin seems unstable and desperate, he might see Britain as isolated and deserving of some kind of strike, it wouldnt be the first time that a despot has miscalculated. Robert Peston for one, seems very concerned at the escalation.

Putin will have advisers and will no doubt know once Trump is in the approach differs. What we dont need is Tow Tier Keir sticking an ore in and stirring the pot and getting a reaction from Russia no one (seemingly apart form him) wants. Thats why (apart form other political stupidity) i refer to Labour as Loonies.

They have announced the scrapping of largely obsolete equipment that is beyond economic repair.

The ongoing introduction of new ordnance and equipment carries on. In fact a lot of the kit supplied to Ukraine by the UK is stuff that is being field tested. So very new indeed.

I’m not overly concerned.

the assault ships have already been mothballed (by the previous government) and there was never any plan to replacement.As an ex-junglie I’m a fan of assault ships so was never happy with this.
The frigate is beyond economical repair with damage than wouldn’t have been expected. So yeah ‘utter bollock’.

A bit wet to think Russia wouldn’t know otherwise. Regardless, we’re in a proxy war already and hopefully (along with our NATO allies) we’ll soon be in a full conventional war against this tyrant. IMO Putin must be defeated at all costs. Total war declared on Russia by the West, our lives all channelled to this end. However hard, however long. But now with the full commitment of everyone’s armed forces in the West until not one Russian living soldier remains in Ukraine or Crimea. If he uses Nuclear weapons, then so be it. Destiny was always hell in a handcart.

I disagree, even if all of the equipment is obsolete the timing is incoherent with our green light for Ukraine to start firing storm shadows into Russia.

With the decision to retire the amphibious platforms (at the very least) our armed forces now have a diminished capability, which does not reconcile with the decision by TTK to poke the bear.

All Governments should have defence of the realm on their priority list, so far this lot talk a good game and are evidently happy to escalate the situation with Putin but this decision indicates fragility and reticence to invest in the armed forces to any meaningful degree.

Domestically many people will not understand how we can lavish billions on Ukraine and our newly arrived citizens currently residing in hotels but at the same time we can’t afford to maintain a reasonable military capability.

Can’t say I relish the idea of being sent to war.
While I get your point, in previous wars it was sold to people a lot differently, as it were.
Plus we didn’t have such an insight into the horrors of war we have now.

I see your point and it’s a different world today although if I was at the age of call up I would do it I had to. It won’t happen though so I don’t think anyone has to worry about it.

We seem to be spending a fair bit. I’d assume this includes our contribution to NATO.

“We spent £52.8 billion on defence in 2022/23, rising to £54.2 billion in 2023/24. For 2024/25, our core budget of £51.7 billion combined with assumed additional funding from the Treasury Reserve including for support to Ukraine, means our total defence budget is expected to be £55.6 billion.3 Apr 2024”

£500m of cuts isn’t that much in the scheme of things. And I believe those aren’t true cuts, but value of the equipment we are scrapping?
