Precisely. More time wasted that wouldn’t been able to waste before…
You know you don't have to, right? Same as you're not 'forced to live in' any sort of digital world. Yes, it makes a huge difference to have an email address and possibly a smartphone, but no-one is forcing you to go balls-deep into digitising every aspect of your life.

For instance, I refuse to use the self-ordering screens in the likes of McDonalds and will always speak to a person to place an order – same in restaurants. I've never ordered anything from a food delivery app, used Uber and only very occasionally buy stuff online. I'll go the extra mile to speak to a customer services operative instead of using an online alternative. I don't read books but, if I did – and I was like you – there are plenty of physical options available, same with magazines and newspapers.

Gotta be honest, you're the one who can change it – and how 'digital' you want to be. It's almost completely up to you...

I know what you’re getting at, but Big Tech isn’t just about user inter face frustration. It’s changed everything. Even your thinking.

Yeo, but did they really experience the full joy of beforehand?
I mean I grew up in the late 80s and 90s. Most of my time was spent outside.

It did start getting super advanced in the mid-90s, with tech like the N64 console, and snake on a brick phone, but really this wasn’t the all consuming experience that takes over the lives of many young kids today.

Pretty much. I'm a millennial and had graduated from uni before social media became a big thing. Then I visited 50 countries and moved to the other side of the world before getting my first smartphone.
Exactly. I remember when FB started becoming a thing during my uni days.

In what way?
There’s so many more options available through dating apps. Porn is readily available of all shapes and sizes and perversions. Things like OnlyFans have warped peoples’ minds.

When I was younger, you really only had the options of the girls in your local village or school.

That’s not the case anymore.

So you mean people have unrealistic expectations these days rather than that our perceptions have changed?

I think both. I think our perceptions of beauty have changed as we’re less insular.

And similarly, people now have unrealistic expectations.

Whilst the world has gone to hell in hand basket, the gap between rich and poor is at its widest in recorded history (strangely at its narrowest during my 1970s childhood), I love the fact the Albion are amazing and I can fill every moment of my spare time with Albion related shit on the internet. I love having a big telly and being able to stream anything I want to watch. Also the hunt might be a thing of the past, but discogs satisfies my need for a piece of vinyl super fast.
Just remember food options in the 70s.

Work was definitely better in the 1980's - 1990's when companies still looked after their staff to some extent. With all the extra technology, how come relative pay and benefits have fallen dramatically in the last 30 years.
When I started work at a large insurer we had:
Reasonable pay
Flex time
Decent Holidays
Final Salary Pension Scheme
Company Sports Clubs
Discounted mortgages
Work minibus travel
Extravagant Christmas Parties
Modern Offices

The technology was a mainframe computer system, and a telephone.
