A big thanks to all those NSC’ers who came along and supported the Samaritans x Price of Football show last night in Brighton. Palace fan Kevin Day was a great host and interviewer, and guests Darren Balkham and Albion COO Paul Mullen had loads on insight into reasons why the Albion are successful and policing at football.

The event grossed £3,000 for Samaritans from ticket sales, donations, the auction of Paul McShane’s shirt (which went for £900), books donated by the brilliant Dan Tester and the show hosts and beer sales.

It costs Samaritans £165 a day to run their service in Brighton, and your generosity (and that of others) will be appreciated.

There were some fascinating revelations about the way the club operates. When the Albion first were promoted, annual bonuses for all staff, from tea lady to chief exec, were paid if finished 17th or above. TB then decided he wanted more ambition and came out with the stated aim of top ten finishes. The bonuses were then linked to achieving that objective.

Finishing 11th last season was therefore a tough one to take, especially with you know who taking 10th place, so TB paid out the bonuses anyway due to the way the whole staff contributed to the European campaign.

Contrast that with Manchester United, who have sacked 25% of the staff, taken away travel to cup finals, forced everyone to work at OT five days a week despite there not being enough office space to do so, targeting disabled fans as easy money and much more.

A positive working environment and culture does contribute to the Albion punching above their weight.

How did Kevin cope with being amongst a lot of Brighton fans?

He was on great form, accusing one couple who left a bit early, (we had planned to finish about 9:15 but went on to 10pm) of having to get ready for a ramble today.

My father told me in his youth some players were paid bonuses according to attendance. Bobby Smith was one who increased gates when he signed

Darren Balkham set him up beautifully a couple of times with his tales of European football, so that was nice.

Tough for the staff, but good to hear that the club saved a bit of money.

It was a good night - who'd have thought that a DULLARD could be so interesting?

The most astonishing revelation to me was that the club is currently planning up to 2030; there's looking ahead and there's Brighton looking ahead
