IMHO it's one of those where your initial reaction is no, but then when you think about it there are a number of good arguments in favour:

1. Cover for Baleba - This is a weakness for us, when Carlos gets subbed at the business end of the game. Dier has the physicality and the nous to cover, and - I think - a better option than Moder, Milner or (based on limited evidence, admittedly) Wieffer.
2. Cover at centre back.
3. Ability to drop into a back 3 if we change system.
4. Great passing range for a defensive player.
5. A good presence at corners.
6. International and European experience.
7. Apparently, he speaks fluent Portuguese, so useful when communicating tactics with Igor and Joao Pedro.
8. Motivation - Tuchel now England manager, he got the best out of him at Bayern, a possible recall as utility player not out of the question.

And German and Spanish apparently. That's invaluable. He could speak to Igor, Estupinan, Gruda, Pedro, Enciso, all of the English speakers, Hurzeler and half the coaching team in their own languages. Imagine how many times that could come in useful.

"Minhas sinceras desculpas pelo meu erro Igor."

"Sí Pervis, era demasiado lento para reaccionar allí."

"Entschuldigen Sie mich kurz Fabian. Ich werde einen unserer Unterstützer angreifen."

I think he would do ok for us with taking away the pressure of playing for a top 6 club. He is not particularly quick but neither is Dunk or Igor. Whatever we definitely need to be looking at signing a new CB next season or bringing through a youngster.
or JPVH. Which is EXACTLY why the additions in this area DO need to be.

And O/T

I've thought this about our three CBs up until Saturday, but there were a couple of occasions where Igor absolutely flew across to make interceptions/tackles. I'm beginning to wonder whether I've misjudged just how quick he is ???

No. Still remember Jonathan Liew writing that Steven Alzate (currently playing for Hull) made it look like Dier was playing in a suit if armour.

So many on here saying no "too slow" who would have wet themselves of we'd got 36 year old Mats Hummels in the summer.

Dier would be ideal this season I think. Senior pro, solid enough at this level, versatile, presumably not expecting to start every game. The two positions we look light in numbers are centre back and physical DM, he can do both
Funnily enough whilst searching for more on the slowest players in the Bundesliga, I found an article where Manchester United were being discouraged from signing Mats Hummels as he is too slow.

The article is 10-years old.

From our senior pool of players, we have lost Groß and Lallana, and it feels like Milner is very unlikely to get another year beyond this one. Veltman is also out of contract in the summer.

We do seem to like having a few wise old heads to balance out all the exuberant youngsters that pack our squad, and Dier does seem to have the kind of profile that fits with that.

In fairness, Hummels and Dier aren’t exactly in the same talent bracket
