To be fair, I didn't know where A Coruña was either. But I spent two minutes on Google and now I know more about A Coruña than he, apparently, knows about Brighton and Hove.

They have a Roman lighthouse. They claim it is the only one still standing and operational. Neat.

They also once had a great football team, Deportivo de la Coruna won La Liga, the Copa Del Rey and got to the semi finals of the champions league in the early 2000's! My wifes family is from there and its a lovely city, its been really sad to see Deportivo fall down the leagues.

Glad to see the use of ’a’ rather than ‘la’. We don’t want any of that Castilian bollocks in Galicia.
Santiago is about 45 mins away from A Coruna.
…. and yes the light house does work.

There are two groups with 20 teams in Primera RFEF. Some good teams there that have played in La Liga not too long ago. Obviously Deportivo who got promoted to Segunda, then also Malaga (they're playing in one of the promotion playoff finals against the Catalan team Gimnastic Tarragona) and Cordoba (they are playing against Barca B in the other final). Also Recreativo Huelva as the oldest Spanish football team. And then besides those you also have subsidiaries of La Liga clubs (Barca Atletic, RM Castilla, Atletico B, Real Sociedad B - they were playing in Segunda last season, Celta Fortuna,...).

While general level is not too high there are still solid teams with good players. For example our own Fermin Lopez played on loan at Linares in Primera RFEF in 2022/23. Then he returned to Barca and had breakthrough season and is now part of Spain squad for Euros. So you never know where you can find a hidden gem.

Not sure about record transfer for Deportivo, maybe you've meant Denilson from Sao Paulo to Betis?

That said, Deportivo did have a great team in the 90s and start of this century when they also won La Liga and qualified for CL semi finals in 2004 after eliminating Milan with that great comeback win. Good old times.

Rivaldo started his European career in La Coruna in 1996 but only stayed one season before joining Barca. And then they also had likes of Roy Makaay, Pauleta, Pandiani and Djalminha.

They last played in La Liga in 2017/18. Next season they failed in promotion playoffs and a season after they were relegated to Segunda B (now named Primera RFEF). They spent last four seasons playing in 3rd and always finished top 4 but couldn't get through promotion playoffs. And this season they finally won their group and got directly promoted (sadly at the cost of our B team but I'm still happy for them).
I was at Coruna airport flying back to Blighty when Rivaldo flew out to sign for Barcelona.

We have fallen a very long way and can thank Lucas Perez for getting the goals that got us back into Segunda. He‘s a local lad and basically paid off his contract so he could sign for Depor. It cost him just under 500k …

Sadly very depressing. I can still vividly remember watch the final game of the ‘99 season on Sky when Donato scored the first with a thundering header. My uncle was at the game and he said it was the greatest moment of his life,

They also have some infamous artworks at the cruise terminal entrance that everyone who visits will have a photo of

They’re on their way back though thanks to former Arsenal player and Depor legend Lucas Perez!

I’ve always liked Depor, partly due to the kit, but also since the early 2000’s days of Pablo, Fran, Victor, Tristan and my absolute favourite, Juan Carlos Valeron. What a team they were!

Francisco Gonzalez for me. Galician who played 550 games for Depor, also Manuel Pablo.

Edit: just looked the 1999 squad … I had forgotten just how good it was.

Why was the keeper up at the end? Worst case it was going to penalties no?

No, Nastic would be promoted if overall result would be tied after 120 minutes because they've finished higher in their respective Primera RFEF group.

Don't ask me why, just Spanish football logic. :ROFLMAO:

That team was superb, I must have been 8 or 9 but had a real soft spot for Depor growing up and watching them in the CL. The battering ram Walter Pandiani up top as well. How he and Tristan ended up at Birmingham and West Ham respectively 😑 Valeron was an incredible footballer, hugely underrated and forgotten somehow.

Yeah Valeron was brilliant, as you say, hugely under rated. And like Juan Roman Riquelme of that era, a proper number 10 that you just don't get in the game any more. Both players incredibly slow but with a brain, touch and skill way ahead of everyone else.

He still hasn't bothered to open Google Maps (other mapping apps are available) and find out where we are it seems...

“It took me no time [to tell Brighton I didn't want to join them]. The same time it took me to answer this question, I told them that I wanted to continue here at Dépor.
As Hugo said, I don’t even know where Brighton is,”
