I have no wish to turn this place into Mumsnet or become @crodonilson, but this is a Sussex thing.
I was (not) forced into watching Bake Off tonight & they had to make a Banoffee Pie, I was most shocked that they had to make pastry as if it were an actual 'pie'. The only thing I've ever been able to make well is a Banoffee Pie but have always made a biscuit base & have always known Banoffee Pie to have a biscuit base. I just want to know if I've been doing it wrong all these years or whether I should be putting a complaint into C4?
Yes this has bothered me so much that I've felt the need to ask & create a pole (they'll give their opinion later).

Biscuit base. It is my all-time favourite dessert and I’m not a dessert guy, but I’ll always have Banoffee Pie if it’s available.

I’ve never, ever seen it served in pastry and it sounds weird.

Sounds like they didn’t have a clue and I’m quite upset hearing about this

Pastry or biscuit base is good. Not exactly the most challenging of recipes though especially now you can buy tins of caramelised condensed milk rather than having to boil it a tin for a couple of hours!!

Pre-caramelised condensed milk has the wrong consistency. Too sloppy. I can always tell a pie that has had the shortcut applied to it. It needs a more gelatinous consistency which comes from boiling your own or boiling the nestle pre-cooked until it holds like jelly.

Loving this! Could anything be more NSC than discussing the merits of Banoffee pie? I don’t even know what it is but am in bits laughing about this thread. Yes I have had too much too drink!

We make it using a pastry base, always have, but it doesn't matter. Whatever you prefer really.

Not. On. My. Watch.

If they come and try and force pastry onto the banoffee pie I know and love, I’ll be up on that barricade fighting like Jean Valjean
First they came for trifle
And I did not speak out
Because I do not like trifle
Then they came for apple pie
And I did not speak out
Because I do not like apple pie
Then they came for tiramisu
And I did not speak out
Because I do not like fancy foreign muck
Then they came for spotted dick
And I did not speak out
Because I do not watch porn. Honest. Check my browser history.
Then they came for the biscuit base of banoffee pie
And there was no one left
Because Bake Off used pastry. The heathens.

I had it in my head that it was a pastry base.... but I haven't made one for YEARS

Whatever you prefer is the answer I guess. Personally I think biscuits give off a mediocre cheesecake vibe, but live and let live etc
