Gary Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day until an agreement is reached on his social media use - BBC statement.
It follows an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the government's new asylum policy.
In a tweet, the presenter had compared the language used by the government to set out its plan to "that used by Germany in the 30s".

End of the season for Mr Lineker.

He’s had a good run, but it’s felt a bit tired to me over the last couple of seasons.

I wonder who’s next, and whether they change the format at all.
If he isn't replaced with a strong permanent anchor the programme will fade just like TOTP faded when it tried to get with it and go 'zoo', or whatever the f*** it did with its self.

I watch MOTD because its permanent host and regular pundits present a long-game continuity of soft journalism and perspective as well as the highlights. If I just want highlights there is youtube.

At least we are spared the prospect of Jermain 'JJ' Jenas telling us how it used to be back in the day, when men were men, tackles were tackles, and selfies were of your face.

It seems to be that he did want to stay on, but the BBC wanted to end his contract possibly because of the social media row with the tweets he made and the suits not wanting their presenters showing political views.

Lineker leaving is great news. Don't like the guy or his lefty opinions which he really should keep to himself. Give the job to Mark Chapman who is excellent. Do NOT give the job to a woman.

I don't remember him saying

"So Danny, talk us through the Southampton's defence ....which in my opinion is as weak as the Tory policies on ......"

While you’re in the 1960’s do you think you could pick me up a pack of 20 Kent Menthols and a bottle of Amaro Savonitti.

Cheers

Isn't/wasn't Lineaker the hioghest paid person at the Beeb? Getting commercially slaughtered by the streamers, it's no surprise that they aren't renewing his contract, whatever he would prefer.

Worth listening to The Rest is Entertainment podcast if you want an easy to follow take on how streaming is affecting linear TV.

No objection to his politics or his salary.
But I don't particularly like his style of presenting.
Hopefully he will take Shearer and Richards with him too.

Yet, he will still present the World Cup games.
