Feel free to merge, but not seen anything similar on a thread search. I was over Rye Harbour Nature Reserve yesterday evening and got my first ever sighting of a Marsh Harrier. Was very big, so possibly a female? She was hunting over the reed beds. Unfortunately, a bit far away for me to get...

Never seen a hoopoe in the flesh, but I can tell you that in Dutch it is called a hop.
As a result it is oft seen on craft beer labels over here...

Skye in November is a long way out of any hoopoe's comfort zone, you'd think! A random like this obviously doesn't prove anything, but it does make you think about the impacts of climate change on species range. In the face of environmental threat a species has only three options: relocate, evolve, or become extinct. Our current period of climate change is too fast for option two, so... perhaps that shivering hoopoe is a tiny part of a species location-shift northwards? Or, of course, was just blown there after straying into strong winds. Or is unusually fond of Talisker and haggis. Foolish to extrapolate from a single datum, but thought-provoking anyway, thanks for the post.

Ground feeding but nests in old woodpecker holes, walls of old buildings and even nest boxes, but certainly not on the ground.
