With October 31st approaching, give a lecture to anyone you know with fake cobwebs outside their home. They can be deadly to garden birds.

Had a subtle shift in visitors over the last couple of years. Previously inundated with mostly Blue and Great Tits (they also use our nestboxes) plus the regular Nuthatches, Robins, Wrens and suchlike (plus bigger woodland residents like jays, woodpeckers etc) but now getting increasing numbers of Goldfinches (this is the second year we've had an obvious group of youngsters feeding with the parents) and now Greenfinches. My neighbour often talked about the hordes of Greenfinches that he used to see in the 80s but we'd never seen them until recently (we've lived here almost 30 years, he's been here 40 and is an avid bird man) - from an initial pair last summer we're now getting several on the feeders multiple times a day. Costing me a fortune in sunflower hearts :lolol:

In the 60s there used to be very large flocks of Greenfinches feeding on the beech tree mast in Surrenden Road.

I’m rubbish at identifying birds. Anyone tell me what this is? We have loads of them helping themselves from feeder in our tree.

Has anyone on here found a decent birdwatching podcast? I listen to the US Dirty Bird podcast which is OK - tells you everything you're likely to want to know about a particular species - but obviously has a transatlantic focus. Ta.

Btw, Great Tit has a fairly easy recognisable call too. Imagine a kid swinging on a squeaky gate, is how I like to remember it.

I reckon there may be a (or pair) of Red Kites nesting somewhere around the Pylons on the A23. I saw one flying around there this morning and that's my third or fourth sighting above that stretch in the last few weeks.

Stunning bird in flight.
