I have been all over England watching Brighton play, and seen some very desperate places.....these scenes tugged at my warm socialist heart.
Might you describe yourself as the very definition of a champagne socialist though? Would that be fair do you think? You live abroad, and based on your posts here, you spend enough on fancy meals and nice drinks in one night to feed a family of four for a week.

No. Socialism is not about being poor, it's about being fair and equal and having hope and opportunity for all.

I support the simple premise that education should be free, if people do not want to take up this free offer then fine. Regarding tax, we all subsidise someone or something we do not use. London subsidises the entire country to varying degrees, I was happy to do this when I lived there.
DSR said those who "Can't" get into University whereas you are saying "Want". If you go along with education should be free should that then be available to everyone ?.

Yes, I feel it should be freely accessible to everyone who wants to further their education. There are obvious caveats, if you want to study rocket science then you obviously need the right qualifications to go on and do this, but i'm sure you get my drift.

There used to be on the job training. Nurses studied for three years before qualifying but someone decided that to earn more money they needed a degree. (Bear with me)
Obviously, nursing is far more medically advanced now, than making beds & emptying bed pans, so it was a good idea, but then the bursary was reduced. Yes, those medical degrees should be subsidised, including radiologists, physiotherapists etc. We want an NHS and should be prepared to fund it, according to our means.
Agreed. someone who medically qualifies and then works in the NHS should not be paying fees. Something could surely be worked out either to exempt medical training from the fee issue, or for the person to "pay" the fees over time via credit for working in the NHS.

But if the question is put the other way round, is it fair that less intellectual people (those that can't get into university) should be taxed so that the cleverer ones who are ultimately likely to be on higher wages, can have three subsidised years of education?
Depends on whether you value the skills that a Uni education offers?

If you value working and living in well design buildings, driving over bridges that are safe, being kept in good health by doctors etc. then shouldn’t everyone contribute towards having those vital skills?

Equally we all contribute to the building and maintenance of roads and transport infrastructure even if we don’t personally use them, because society and the economy needs them.

So what about the engineers that design operating theatres? The chemists that develop medicines? Biologists that do medical research? Architects & Engineers that design hospitals? Electrical Engineers and Product designers that develop medical machines and instruments? IT and computer engineers that develop healthcare systems and technology?

Tad ignorant and sarcastic comment….many farmers are asset rich yes…but cash poor …..a difficult job at the mercy of extreme weather which seems to be increasing …..and the return can be with low pay ..but some do it as its a family vocation …and hey thank goodness they do eh! …but i guess the warm heart of socialism doesnt extend that far?

Which they can easily bring in those family members as partners, directors, shareholders of the business while the farmer is still alive. Why would a farmer expect his family to all work the farm for most of their lives with no assets or share of assets at all until the farmer dies?

All that needs to happen is a change in mindset of farmers that if a family is involved, start succession planning early like every other family business has to.

Given the most affected are people like James Dyson, Clarkson (who admitted buying the land to avoid inheritance tax) I’m glad it’s been closed to tax the wealthy who can afford it

What % of the land owners are farmers themselves ? A lot of farmers are now tenant farmers who lease the land …

What’s a lot? You might be able to answer your own question

a quick google….but you’d need to check for accuracy and date

In England, 14% of farms are wholly tenanted, while 31% are mixed tenure, and 54% are owner occupied. Tenant farmers manage about a third of all farmland in England.

Who is next in line for our new democratically elected landslide winning leaders to upset?
Pensioners, employers, farmers, students, parents of students already picked on. Which section of the populace is next?
